Product Description

My friend Kali is the most amazingly fashionable lady I know. She has this eye for style and clothes that I could never hope to have. When she asked me to make her a cowl, I knew I wanted to make her something that would fit right into her wardrobe. Thus, Kali's Cowl was born.

A little Victorian, a little lacy, Kali's Cowl is just the thing to throw on when you want a little feminine touch without going overboard. Kali's Cowl comes in 4 sizes, with instructions on how to customize it to your own size. The cowl comes with shaping to help it stay up and reveal those beautiful motifs.

The motifs are worked from side-to side until it reaches desired length, then joined to work in the round for the main body. The motifs are fully charted and written out.

This pattern is fully charted and written out. It is written in US terms.

What is Being Made

Kali's Cowl is a versatile crocheted neck accessory designed by Joyce Yu. This pattern offers multiple construction options to suit different preferences and styling needs. Crafters can choose between circular versions in Small, Medium, or Double-Wrapped sizes, or opt for a buttoned variation. The finished circumferences range from 18 inches for the Small size up to 40 inches for the Double-Wrapped version, with the buttoned option measuring 13 inches. This flexibility makes Kali's Cowl suitable for various body types and layering preferences, whether worn as a close-fitting neck warmer or a more generous draped cowl.

Crochet Techniques Used

This intermediate-level crochet project employs several fundamental and specialized techniques. The pattern utilizes foundation double crochet (fdc) as a starting method, which creates a stable base row while simultaneously building height. Crafters will work in the round (rnd) to construct the circular versions, maintaining consistent tension throughout. The pattern incorporates double crochet (dc) stitches as the primary stitch structure, combined with single crochet (sc) for shaping and detail work. The buttoned variation features a different construction method from the circular versions and requires button attachment, adding a functional and decorative element. The pattern notes reference unusual stitches with a dedicated stitch guide, and Joyce Yu provides photo tutorials to assist crafters with potentially challenging techniques.

Stitches Used

  • Foundation Double Crochet (fdc): Used to establish the initial foundation row with integrated height
  • Double Crochet (dc): The primary stitch forming the main fabric structure
  • Single Crochet (sc): Employed for shaping and detail work
  • Double Crochet 2 Together (dc2tog): A decrease stitch for shaping the cowl
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • Chain (ch): Foundation chains and spacing elements throughout the pattern

Materials Required

Yarn: Comfy Sport weight yarn in quantities varying by size—1 skein for Small and Medium sizes, 2 skeins for the Double-Wrapped version, and 1 skein for the buttoned option. Sport weight yarn provides a lightweight, breathable fabric ideal for a cowl that can be worn in multiple seasons.

Tools and Notions: A Size F hook (3.75mm) is used throughout the pattern to achieve the correct gauge. A tapestry needle is necessary for weaving in yarn ends and finishing. The buttoned version requires three 3/8-inch pearl buttons for closure and embellishment.

Gauge and Sizing Information

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this project. The pattern specifies that 19 double crochets and 10 rows should measure 4 inches in width and height respectively. Additionally, 7 rows of the motif measures 3.5 inches. Checking gauge before beginning ensures that the finished cowl will achieve the intended dimensions and drape properly around the neck.

Pattern Difficulty Level

Kali's Cowl is rated as an intermediate crochet project, making it suitable for crafters with foundational crochet skills who are ready to expand their technique repertoire. While the basic stitches are fundamental, the pattern's use of foundation double crochet, working in the round, and specialized stitch variations require comfort with standard crochet methods. The inclusion of a stitch guide and photo tutorials by designer Joyce Yu provides valuable support for navigating any unfamiliar techniques.
