Kaleidoscope Hat by Kimberly Voisin
What is Being Made
Kaleidoscope is an advanced knit hat designed to showcase the natural beauty of variegated and multicoloured yarn. This one-size-fits-multiple hat is available in three finished circumference options: Child (17"/43 cm), Adult Small (18.5"/47 cm), and Adult Large (20"/51 cm). The design is specifically engineered to prevent yarn pooling, a common challenge when working with variegated skeins, by using a faceted texture that celebrates the unique colour variations rather than allowing them to create unwanted patterns.
Construction Technique
The Kaleidoscope hat employs a two-stage construction method. The brim is worked flat initially, then stitches are picked up along the brim edge to transition into in-the-round knitting for the crown. This hybrid approach allows for a structured, finished edge on the brim while enabling the decorative pattern work to develop seamlessly as the hat is completed in the round.
Stitch Pattern and Texture
The signature kaleidoscope texture is created using a slip stitch pattern worked in the round. The pattern is worked with one colour at a time, making it accessible despite the advanced difficulty rating. Knitters have the flexibility to work the entire hat in a single colour or introduce a second colour for added visual interest. The slip stitch technique creates the faceted, geometric appearance that gives the hat its name while naturally breaking up variegated yarn in a way that prevents pooling.
Gauge and Needle Requirements
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this project. The specified gauge is 24 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Knitters should use US Size 4 (3.5 mm) needles, specifically 16-inch circular needles and double-pointed needles (DPNs), or adjust needle size as needed to achieve the correct gauge. Proper gauge ensures the hat will fit correctly across all three size options.
Materials
The sample hat shown was knitted using Malabrigo Arroyo, a 100% superwash wool yarn that provides 335 yards (306 metres) per 100-gram skein. The sample features two colours: CC (Contrast Colour) in shade 43 Plomo and MC (Main Colour) in shade 872 Purpuras, with one skein of each colour used. Additional notions required include a stitch marker and yarn needle for finishing.
Yarn Selection Considerations
While the pattern is written for Malabrigo Arroyo, the Kaleidoscope design is particularly well-suited to any variegated or multicoloured yarn in a similar weight and yardage. The slip stitch pattern's ability to showcase colour variation makes this hat an excellent project for knitters looking to feature special or hand-dyed skeins that might be difficult to work into other patterns.
