K833 – Opal Shawl by Nazanin Fard

Project Overview

The K833 – Opal Shawl is an advanced-level knitted trapezoid shawl designed to be worked from the neck down. This sophisticated accessory features elegant lace patterning and a distinctive scalloped edge, making it a striking addition to any wardrobe. The design showcases multiple lace techniques combined with strategic increases to create a graceful, flowing silhouette.

What Is Being Made

This is a trapezoid-shaped shawl that begins at the neckline and expands downward through strategic stitch increases. The shawl reaches approximately 28 inches in length before transitioning to a final lace pattern that creates a beautiful scalloped edge. The finished piece is a wearable lace accessory combining both structural shaping and decorative patterning.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Top-down construction: The shawl is worked from a small number of stitches at the neck edge, expanding outward as the project grows
  • Lace patterning: Multiple lace stitch patterns are incorporated throughout the design, including eyelet patterns along the wings and center
  • Strategic increases: Make One (M1) increases are used to expand the shawl from its starting point of 22 stitches
  • Pattern transitions: The design shifts from one lace pattern to a different pattern approximately 28 inches into the project, creating visual interest and the signature scalloped edge
  • Crochet finishing: A crochet chain bind-off is used to complete the shawl, adding both structural integrity and decorative detail to the final edge

Stitches and Stitch Details

  • Eyelet pattern: Creates openwork details along the edge and throughout the shawl
  • Lace patterns: Two distinct lace patterns are used—one along the center of the shawl and one on each wing section
  • Make One (M1) increase: Worked by knitting in the yarn between the stitch just knit and the next stitch on the needle, creating an invisible increase that maintains pattern integrity
  • Crochet chain bind-off: Provides a flexible, decorative edge finish that complements the lace patterning

Materials and Specifications

Yarn Requirements: The shawl requires 792 yards (725 meters) of super fine (fingering) weight yarn. The sample project was worked using Knit Picks Chroma Fingering in the colorway Drawing Room #26926, which is composed of 70% Superwash Wool and 30% Nylon. Two 100-gram balls (396 yards per ball) of this yarn were used for the sample.

Accent Yarn: Kreinik Twist is used as an accent element, consisting of 65% Polyester and 35% Nylon. Three skeins of 250 meters each in the Berry #031 colorway are required.

Tools: US size 4 (3.5 mm) knitting needles are used for the main shawl construction. A US size F (3.75 mm) crochet hook is needed for the crochet chain bind-off. Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and shaping increases throughout the project.

Gauge and Sizing

The gauge for this project is 22 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in the lace patterns on US size 4 needles. Maintaining accurate gauge is important for achieving the intended finished dimensions and drape of the shawl.

Difficulty Level

This shawl is rated as an advanced knitting project, suitable for experienced knitters. The combination of multiple lace patterns, top-down shaping, and the transition between different stitch patterns requires strong foundational knitting skills and the ability to read and follow complex lace charts.
