Product Description
Fingerless gloves are easy to make and are very useful. They are perfect for gift- giving and are always much appreciated by the recipient. This pair of gloves follows a beautiful lace pattern for the back of the hand. I like to include a thumb opening which prevents the glove from twisting around the hand. For this pair, I have used a vertical thumb opening which is inconspicuous, yet very practical. The matching hat follows the same pattern as the back of the hand and makes a perfect match for the gloves.
K686 – Lace Fingerless Gloves & Matching Hat by Nazanin Fard
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a coordinated set consisting of fingerless gloves and a matching hat. Fingerless gloves are practical accessories that provide warmth while keeping fingers free for dexterity and tactile tasks. This particular design features elegant lace patterning on the back of the hand, making the set both functional and visually appealing. The matching hat completes the coordinated look, making this an ideal project for gift-giving or personal use.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project classified at intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with more complex stitch patterns. The pattern employs circular knitting techniques, worked in the round using circular needles. This method creates seamless garments and allows for continuous knitting without turning.
Key techniques used in this pattern include:
- Cable stitches – specifically 2/2 RC (right cable), which involves slipping stitches onto a cable needle, holding them to the back, and crossing them over knit stitches for decorative twisted effects
- Lace knitting – incorporating yarn overs and decreases to create openwork patterns on the back of the hand
- Decrease techniques – including k2tog (knit two together) and s2kp2 (slip, knit, pass slipped stitches over), which shape the lace motifs
- Yarn overs – creating the holes and delicate openwork characteristic of lace patterns
Stitches Used
The pattern features a specialized lace pattern for the gloves worked over a panel of 19 stitches on the back of the hand. This 8-round repeat pattern alternates between stockinette and patterned rounds:
- Odd-numbered rounds (1, 3, 5, 7) establish the base structure with purl and knit stitches
- Even-numbered rounds introduce lace elements through yarn overs and decreases
- Round 2 and 4 feature a simple lace motif with k2tog and yarn over combinations
- Round 6 incorporates the centered s2kp2 decrease for a more pronounced lace effect
- Round 8 combines cable stitches (2/2 RC on both sides) with centered lace decreases for visual interest
Additional stitches employed include basic knit and purl stitches for the palm and other sections of the gloves and hat.
Materials and Specifications
This pattern requires 328 yards (300 meters) of sport weight yarn in a natural fiber – specifically 100% alpaca in a natural colorway. Alpaca yarn provides excellent warmth, softness, and drape, making it ideal for delicate lace work and comfortable close-to-skin accessories.
Tools needed include:
- Two 16-inch (40 cm) circular knitting needles in size 4 (3.5 mm)
- One cable needle for working cable stitches
Stitch gauge is 22 stitches and 32 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) when working the lace pattern for the palm of the hand using size 4 needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for correct fit, particularly in fitted accessories like gloves.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Nazanin Fard, making it immediately accessible for digital viewing and printing. The format allows knitters to reference instructions on screens or printed pages while working.
