Product Description
This is a fabulous triangular shawl that is worked from the center of the back neck and increased every other row to size. The pattern for the main part is a very easy eyelet pattern. Then a border is added and later the bottom edge is decorated with a beautiful lace edging. To add to the beauty of the design, pearls have been added to the center of the eyelet triangles, to certain points of the border, and to the edging. You can decide not to use beads at all or add more beads, especially to the border and edging.
K661 – Tahoe Shawl by Nazanin Fard
What is Being Made
The Tahoe Shawl is an advanced-level triangular knit shawl designed to be worked from the center of the back neck outward. This downloadable PDF knitting pattern produces a generous wrap measuring approximately 62 inches (157 cm) across the top edge (wingspan) and 30 inches (76 cm) deep, making it a substantial and elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping.
Construction and Design Techniques
This shawl employs a center-back construction method, beginning with a small cast-on of 7 stitches that expands symmetrically through strategic increases. The design features a central spine marked with stitch markers, with mirrored lace panels developing on either side of this center line. The triangular silhouette is achieved through paired yarn overs and decreases that create an elegant, airy fabric. The pattern incorporates bead embellishment, with approximately 410 three-millimeter pearl beads integrated into the finished piece for added sophistication and visual interest.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
The Tahoe Shawl utilizes a range of fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches and techniques:
- Yarn overs (yo) – used extensively to create the lace openwork characteristic of the design
- Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches – form the foundation of the fabric and edge treatments
- Stockinette stitch – creates smooth, structured sections within the lace pattern
- Decrease stitches – specifically knit two together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) – balance the yarn overs and shape the shawl
- Knit through the back loop (k1b) – adds textural variation and twisted stitches for visual depth
- Stitch markers (PM/SM) – used to track the center spine and pattern repeat sections
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Tahoe Shawl requires 900 yards (823 meters) of lace weight yarn in 100% fine merino wool, specified in white for the pattern shown. Lace weight yarn is among the finest yarn categories, requiring precision and patience during knitting. The merino wool fiber provides softness, breathability, and elasticity ideal for lace shawlettes. Knitting needles in size 3 (3.25 mm) are used to work the delicate lace pattern. A steel crochet hook in size 10 (1.3 mm) is also required, likely for bead attachment or finishing techniques. Notably, gauge is not critical for this project, allowing knitters flexibility in their tension while maintaining the intended finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
Classified as an advanced knitting project, the Tahoe Shawl is best suited for experienced knitters comfortable with lace knitting, reading complex stitch patterns, working with fine-weight yarns, and managing multiple stitch markers. The combination of yarn overs, decreases, and bead integration requires attention to detail and familiarity with intermediate-to-advanced techniques.
