K642 – Road to Recovery Wrap by Nazanin Fard

What Is Being Made

The Road to Recovery Wrap is a medium-sized knitted shawl designed as a versatile rectangular wrap measuring approximately 24 inches (61 cm) by 47 inches (119 cm) without edging. This intermediate-level knitting project combines two complementary yarn colors—Apricot and Coral—to create a sophisticated, harmonious finished piece. The wrap is suitable for adding warmth and style to any wardrobe, with its elegant proportions making it practical for various occasions.

Knitting Techniques Used

This wrap employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive aesthetic. The primary construction uses a yarn-over lace pattern worked across the body of the wrap, creating an open, airy fabric. The designer incorporates color work by alternating between two yarn colors (Apricot and Coral) throughout the pattern rows, which produces visual interest and depth without requiring complex colorwork methods. To seamlessly integrate the color changes at the edges, an applied I-cord has been added, which is a decorative cord technique that hides transitions between colors. The wrap is finished with a Shark Tooth edging worked in both colors, adding a whimsical, decorative border that frames the entire piece.

Stitches and Stitch Pattern

The Road to Recovery Wrap features a simple yet effective Yarn-Over Pattern that repeats over a multiple of 2 stitches plus 3 additional stitches. The four-row pattern repeat is as follows:

  • Row 1 (Right Side) with Color A: Knit 1, then repeat knit 2 together and yarn-over across, ending with knit 2
  • Row 2: Purl across
  • Row 3 with Color B: Knit 2, then repeat yarn-over and slip-slip-knit across, ending with knit 1
  • Row 4: Purl across

This pattern repeat creates the characteristic lace openings and color alternation. The stitches used include knit (k), purl (p), yarn-over (yo), knit 2 together (k2tog), and slip-slip-knit (ssk). The yarn-over stitches create the lace effect, while the decreases (k2tog and ssk) balance the yarn-overs to maintain stitch count. Notably, gauge is not critical for this design, making it more forgiving for knitters who may not achieve exact gauge specifications.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Road to Recovery Wrap requires a total of 816 yards (746 meters) of DK (double knitting) weight yarn. The yarn composition is 70% viscose from bamboo and 30% silk, providing a luxurious, breathable fabric with excellent drape—ideal for a wrap garment. The sample project was worked using Patons Silk Bamboo yarn, with 8 balls each of two colors: Apricot #85510 (Color A) and Coral #85511 (Color B). Each ball contains 2.20 ounces (62 grams) and yields 102 yards (93 meters).

The pattern calls for size 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needles for the main fabric, along with 2 additional double-pointed needles of the same size (4.5 mm) for working the applied I-cord edging. The combination of bamboo viscose and silk creates a soft, lustrous wrap with natural sheen, while the DK weight provides a fabric that is neither too heavy nor too delicate.

Design Summary

The Road to Recovery Wrap showcases a thoughtful design that balances simplicity with visual appeal. The straightforward yarn-over lace pattern is accessible to intermediate knitters while producing an elegant, sophisticated result. The two-color approach—alternating Apricot and Coral—creates a harmonious aesthetic without requiring complex colorwork skills. The applied I-cord and Shark Tooth edging details demonstrate attention to finishing and add whimsical character to the completed wrap. This project is an excellent choice for knitters seeking to expand their skills with lace and color techniques while creating a wearable, luxurious accessory.
