When Rhino, in the days before history, stole the cake that Man had baked, Man got his revenge by sprinkling the inside of Rhino’s skin with cake crumbs. The crumbs itched so much that Rhino couldn’t help but scratch, and scratch until his skin was all bunched up and wrinkled around his shoulders. Like Rhino’s skin this fairly tall, narrow cowl, folds around your neck or can be pulled up to cover your ears and face. Judicious picking up of stitches will allow the completed piece to be fully reversible

Just So Stories Cowls by Mary E Rose Designs

Project Overview

Just So Stories is a collection of downloadable knitting patterns for cowls inspired by Rudyard Kipling's classic tales. This intermediate-level knitting project transforms storytelling into wearable fiber art, with each design drawing narrative inspiration from the beloved Just So Stories. The patterns are designed for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle more intricate stitch work and shaping techniques.

What Is Being Made

The featured design, How the Rhino Got His Skin, creates a fairly tall, narrow cowl that mimics the wrinkled, bunched texture of a rhinoceros's skin. The finished cowl measures 20 inches in circumference and 12 inches in depth (51 cm by 25 cm), making it a substantial neckwear piece that can be worn in multiple ways. The cowl can be worn traditionally around the neck or pulled up to cover the ears and face for added warmth and coverage.

Techniques and Construction

This pattern employs judicious picking up of stitches as a key construction technique, which allows the completed cowl to be fully reversible. This thoughtful approach to stitch placement means both sides of the finished garment are equally polished and wearable, adding versatility and value to the finished piece. The technique of picking up stitches strategically requires intermediate-level knitting knowledge and precision.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The pattern utilizes worsted weight yarn worked at a gauge of 12 stitches and 24 rows per 4 inches (10 cm). While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, the reversible construction and wrinkled texture inspiration suggest the use of strategic increases, decreases, and possibly textured stitches that create the bunched, folded appearance reminiscent of the Rhino's skin.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The pattern calls for Knit Picks Felici Worsted Weight Yarn, a practical choice for cowl construction. Each skein contains 218 yards (199 meters) per 100 grams (3.53 ounces). The yarn composition is 75% Wool and 25% Nylon/Polyamide, combining the warmth and elasticity of wool with the durability and shape-retention properties of nylon, making it ideal for a frequently-worn cowl that maintains its structure.

Tools and Notions

  • US 7 (4.5 mm) needles for working the worsted weight yarn at the specified gauge
  • Large-eyed tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming the finished pieces together

Skill Level and Suitability

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is best suited for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable with techniques such as picking up stitches, shaping, and finishing details. The reversible construction requirement adds complexity beyond beginner patterns, making it an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their technical skills while creating a practical, wearable garment.
