Jupiter Amigurumi Knitting Pattern by ButterflyLove1
What Is Being Made
Jupiter is a decorative knitted amigurumi plush toy designed to represent the planet Jupiter. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a stuffed spherical ornament approximately 5.5 inches (13.5cm) in height, suitable for display, gifting, or collection as a space-themed decoration. The finished piece features the characteristic banded appearance of Jupiter through strategic use of variegated and solid-colored yarns.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This pattern employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques, which involve knitting in the round to create three-dimensional stuffed forms. The key to successful Jupiter creation is working at a deliberately tight tension—using knitting needles two to three sizes smaller than the yarn's standard recommendation. This tight gauge prevents polyfil stuffing from showing through the knitted fabric, ensuring a professional finished appearance. The pattern specifies a working tension of 28 stitches and 37 rows per 4-inch (10cm) square using US3/3.25mm needles, which directly determines the final size of the completed plush.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches fundamental to amigurumi work. The primary stitches employed are:
- Knit (K) – the foundational stitch creating the fabric structure
- Purl (P) – used to create texture variation and shaping details
These simple stitches, combined through increases and decreases typical of amigurumi shaping, allow crafters to form the rounded planetary shape. The stitch abbreviations provided in the pattern (K and P) indicate this is an accessible intermediate project that does not require complex cable work or advanced stitch techniques.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Jupiter is designed for DK (double knitting) weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn category ideal for creating detailed amigurumi with good stitch definition. The pattern calls for a total of approximately 40 grams of yarn distributed across four distinct colorways to create Jupiter's signature striped appearance:
- Yarn A (10g) – Variegated grey, blue, orange, and russet tones; the pattern suggests King Cole Drifter Super Soft DK 1366 'Boston' as a suitable option
- Yarn B (10g) – Light grey solid yarn; Sirdar Snuggly DK 487 'Cloud' is recommended
- Yarn C (10g) – Variegated brown, cream, and russet tones; King Cole Drifter Super Soft DK 3039 'Montana' is suggested
- Yarn D (10g) – Cream solid yarn; Sirdar Snuggly DK 303 'Cream' is recommended
Additional Materials and Tools
Beyond yarn, the Jupiter pattern requires several essential notions and supplies:
- Knitting Needles – US3/3.25mm needles, sized smaller than standard for the yarn weight to achieve the tight gauge necessary for stuffing containment
- Safety Eyes – Two black toy safety eyes measuring 9mm, which add character and definition to the finished plush
- Stuffing – Polyfil toy stuffing, a standard polyester fiberfill used to fill the amigurumi form and create its three-dimensional shape
- Finishing Tools – A tapestry needle (also called a yarn needle) for weaving in yarn ends and securing the safety eyes
Difficulty Level and Suitability
Classified as an intermediate project, Jupiter is appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who have completed basic projects and are ready to explore amigurumi construction. The pattern does not require advanced techniques such as colorwork, lace, or complex shaping, but does demand attention to tension control and understanding of how to shape a three-dimensional form through increases and decreases. Intermediate crafters will find this an engaging introduction to amigurumi without the complexity of more elaborate designs.
Pattern Format
Jupiter is provided as a downloadable PDF file, allowing crafters to access the complete pattern digitally and print it for reference while working. This format is convenient for keeping pattern instructions visible during knitting sessions.
