Product Description

Juhani's socks were inspired by an old Finnish carol in which brother Juhani and sister Liisi are woken up early on a frosty Christmas Eve morning for a sleigh ride to the church.

Juhani's socks are a simplified version of her sister’s. Wide garter-stitch panels are flanked by narrow cables in these mid-calf length socks worked in warm DK-weight sock yarn.

Juhani's socks are knit from the toe up with a stockinette toe, reinforced heel flap, and twisted-rib cuff. These elegantly modest cabled socks come in three sizes, fit for teens, women, and men alike.

Both written and charted instructions are given for the cable pattern.

Gauge: 23 sts × 32 rnds = 10 cm / 4" in stockinette on larger needles, blocked

Juhani Socks by Susanna Winter

What Is Being Made

Juhani is a mid-calf length sock pattern inspired by a traditional Finnish carol. The design features brother Juhani and sister Liisi preparing for a Christmas Eve sleigh ride to church. These socks represent a simplified version of the sister's design, offering elegantly modest construction suitable for teens, women, and men across three size ranges: Small (EU 38/39 / US 6½–7½), Medium (EU 40/41 / US 8–8½), and Large (EU 43/44 / US 10–11).

Knitting Techniques

Juhani employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance and structure:

  • Working small circumferences in the round: The socks are constructed using circular needles or double-pointed needles to knit seamlessly in the round, essential for sock construction.
  • Cables: Narrow cable panels flank wide garter-stitch sections, creating visual interest and textural contrast throughout the sock leg.
  • German short rows: This advanced shaping technique is used to construct the heel, allowing for a custom fit without traditional heel flaps in certain sections.
  • Toe-up construction: The socks are knit beginning at the toe and working upward toward the cuff, allowing for easy adjustments to sock length.
  • Stockinette toe: The toe section uses stockinette stitch for a smooth, fitted foundation.
  • Reinforced heel flap: Extra stitches and specialized construction strengthen the heel area for durability.
  • Twisted-rib cuff: The cuff features twisted ribbing that provides elasticity and a refined finish.

Stitches Used

  • Garter stitch: Wide panels of garter stitch create textured, reversible sections that frame the cable work.
  • Stockinette stitch: Used in the toe and as the base for cable patterns.
  • Cable stitches: Narrow twisted cables run vertically along the sock leg, flanking the garter-stitch panels.
  • Twisted ribbing: The cuff combines twisted stitches with ribbed construction for elasticity and a polished appearance.

Materials

Juhani is worked in DK-weight yarn, a versatile weight that provides warmth and durability while remaining lightweight enough for comfortable everyday wear. The pattern accommodates working with circular needles or double-pointed needles appropriate for DK-weight sock yarn.

Pattern Format

The Juhani pattern is provided in downloadable PDF format with both written and charted instructions for the cable pattern. This dual-instruction approach accommodates knitters who prefer following written directions as well as those who work from charts. The ability to follow charts is recommended, though written instructions are available as an alternative.

Design Inspiration

Rooted in Finnish cultural tradition, Juhani draws inspiration from an old Finnish carol depicting a family's Christmas Eve preparations. The pattern represents a simplified interpretation of a more complex sister design, making it accessible to intermediate knitters while maintaining elegant, understated aesthetics suitable for festive and everyday occasions alike.
