Product Description
What budding martial artist wouldn't want one of these to show off their new belt colour? They make a great reward for an achievement and always raise a smile from their judo classmates and admiring comments from teachers and parents
This is a quick and easy knit that requires you to be able to cast on, knit back and forth, in the round, and to decrease stitches. It is suitable for approximately ages 2-12 as written but there is guidance in the pattern if you need to make a larger or smaller size.
This pattern is very very similar to my ninja turtle hat so please don't buy both! If you have one pattern you will be able to make both designs with few changes. Please contact me if I can be of assistance.
Judo Hat by Jillian Thom
What Is Being Made
The Judo Hat is a fun, wearable accessory designed to celebrate martial arts achievements and belt colors. Created by designer Jillian Thom, this hat is perfect for young martial artists and judo practitioners of all ages who want to showcase their accomplishments while staying warm. The pattern is particularly popular as a reward for reaching new belt levels in judo training, and it appeals to both children and adults in martial arts communities.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level knitting pattern requires fundamental circular knitting techniques. Knitters will work in the round, which creates a seamless, tubular fabric ideal for hat construction. The pattern incorporates knit and purl stitches to build texture and structure, and uses the knit two together (K2tog) decrease technique to shape the crown of the hat. Because the pattern uses chunky yarn, it works up quickly, making it an efficient project for knitters seeking faster results without sacrificing quality or comfort.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch
- Purl stitch
- Knit two together (K2tog) decreases
Materials and Tools
The Judo Hat pattern calls for 6.5mm circular needles in 40cm length, or alternatively, double-pointed needles (DPNs) for those who prefer that method of working in the round. The yarn recommended is Cygnet Chunky, a premium soft acrylic that is machine washable at 40 degrees Celsius, making it practical for active children and easy to maintain. A smaller crochet hook is also helpful for weaving in yarn ends neatly upon completion.
Pattern Overview
Designed as an intermediate project, the Judo Hat requires basic knitting skills including comfort with circular knitting, fundamental stitches, and simple decreasing techniques. The pattern is accessible to knitters with some experience but remains straightforward enough that any uncertainties can be resolved through online video tutorials. The use of chunky yarn significantly reduces overall knitting time, making this an ideal project for crafters seeking quick, satisfying results.
