Product Description

Jovial is a playful, light-weight shawl. The shawl is worked in three colors, each with its own stitch pattern, adding another layer to the color blocks and stripes. It can be as bold or as subtle as you wish – a band of merry and bright colors or a combination of soft and mellow ones.

The sample was knit using The Fibre Co Canopy fingering in Love in a Mist (C1), Bluestars (C2) and Lantana (C3).

Jovial Shawl by Lina Knits

What is Being Made

Jovial is a playful, lightweight knitted shawl designed by Pauliina Karru of Lina Knits. This three-color shawl combines bold color blocking with stitch pattern variation, allowing knitters to create either vibrant, eye-catching colorways or soft, subtle tonal combinations depending on yarn selection. The design offers versatility in visual impact while maintaining a refined, wearable silhouette.

Design and Color Structure

The shawl features three distinct color sections, each with its own dedicated stitch pattern. This layered approach to color blocking creates visual depth and interest beyond simple striping. The interplay between color changes and stitch pattern transitions adds complexity and sophistication to the finished piece, making it suitable for knitters seeking a design with multiple focal points.

Techniques and Stitches Used

Jovial employs an eyelet stitch pattern as its primary construction method. The eyelet pattern creates an airy, delicate fabric characteristic of lightweight shawls while maintaining structural integrity. The use of three separate stitch patterns—one for each color section—requires intermediate-level knitting skills, as knitters must manage pattern changes alongside color transitions throughout the project.

The construction technique involves working with a circular needle, which is standard for modern shawl design and allows for seamless transitions between sections. Stitch markers are used to track pattern repeats and color changes, essential tools for maintaining accuracy across the multiple pattern sections.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Yarn Weight: Fingering weight (4-ply) yarn is used throughout the project. The pattern calls for approximately 630 meters or 690 yards of fingering weight yarn total, distributed as follows: 450 meters (490 yards) in the primary color (C1), 100 meters (110 yards) in the secondary color (C2), and 80 meters (90 yards) in the tertiary color (C3).

Yarn Composition: The sample was knit using The Fibre Co Canopy fingering yarn, which contains 50% alpaca, 30% wool, and 20% viscose. This fiber blend creates a soft, lustrous fabric with excellent drape—qualities essential for a lightweight shawl. The specific colors used in the sample are Love in a Mist (C1), Bluestars (C2), and Lantana (C3).

Needles and Tools: The pattern requires a 3.5 mm (US size 4) circular needle measuring 80 centimeters (32 inches) in length, or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge. Two stitch markers are necessary for tracking pattern sections and color changes.

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches by 28 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked in the eyelet pattern and measured after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions and drape of the shawl. Blocking is a critical finishing step that sets the stitch definition and allows the eyelet pattern to fully develop its characteristic openwork appearance.

Skill Level

Jovial is classified as an intermediate-level knitting project. This difficulty rating reflects the need to manage multiple stitch patterns, coordinate color changes, and maintain consistent tension across different yarn weights and fiber content. Knitters should be comfortable reading stitch patterns, managing increases or decreases as required by the shawl's construction, and executing eyelet stitches accurately.
