Product Description
Viewed from the front, Joinz cardigan looks like a common comfortable, buttoned cardigan with a nice split at the button band and dropped shoulders for your everyday wardrobe.
But a look at the back shows the interesting construction: a shoulder line shaped by decreases at the middle of the back, a lower back worked sideways and (almost) all parts joined by I-cords.
This cardigan is comfortable, versatile and interesting to knit – all of it, of course, completely seamless! And besides three stitches at each button band, there is no picking up stitches!
YARN(S)
You’ll get beautiful results with a simple fingering weight yarn held together with a mohair (blend) lace yarn. You may as well work this garment with single light-weight yarn with matching gauge (worsted), and it is up to you to work it two-coloured or single-coloured.

Joinz Cardigan by Frl. Staedtisch
What Is Being Made
The Joinz cardigan is a contemporary knitted garment designed as a casual, comfortable everyday piece. From the front, it presents as a classic buttoned cardigan with a distinctive split at the button band and relaxed dropped shoulders. The design features a unique construction visible from the back, with a shaped shoulder line created through strategic decreases at the middle back, and a lower back section worked sideways. The sample demonstrates a body that narrows toward the bottom, though the pattern allows for a straight fit alternative. A slightly curved hem adds refined finishing to the silhouette.
Construction and Techniques
The Joinz cardigan employs an innovative seamless construction method that sets it apart from traditional cardigan patterns. The knitting sequence begins with the neckband, followed by the upper fronts and upper back worked in the round or flat. After establishing the upper body over several rows spanning both fronts and back, the lower back is worked sideways in two separate parts. These sideways sections are then joined together using an I-cord bind off technique, which becomes a signature design element throughout the garment. The fronts are completed by working downward from the upper body, and the sleeves are finished last, each featuring a vertical I-cord detail. This construction method eliminates seaming entirely, creating a completely seamless finished garment.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
- I-cord: Used extensively throughout the design to join nearly all parts of the cardigan, including the lower back sections and as vertical details on the sleeves
- Decreases: Strategically placed at the middle of the back to create the shaped shoulder line
- Bind off: I-cord bind off technique used to join the two sideways-worked lower back sections
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Joinz cardigan is designed to be worked with yarn in multiple weights, offering flexibility for different finished aesthetics. The pattern accommodates 4-ply, lace, and worsted weight yarns, allowing knitters to choose based on desired drape and fabric density. The gauge for this pattern is 18 stitches over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in the main stitch pattern. Knitters will require appropriate needles sized to achieve this gauge with their chosen yarn weight, and the pattern is suitable for intermediate-level knitters who are comfortable with techniques such as decreases, I-cord construction, and sideways knitting methods.
Design Versatility
Beyond its technical interest, the Joinz cardigan offers practical versatility. The option to work the body with either a tapered or straight fit allows customization to personal preference and body type. The dropped shoulders and casual aesthetic make it suitable for layering in various seasons, while the completely seamless construction ensures comfort and durability. The combination of interesting structural elements with a wearable, everyday silhouette makes this design appealing to knitters seeking both technical challenge and practical results.
