Jayden - 8ply Cocoon/Snuggle Bag by Jennifer Lee

What is Being Made

The Jayden is an 8ply cocoon, papoose, or snuggle bag designed to keep babies warm and secure. This knitted wrap features a practical design with a rolled top edge that can be adjusted to achieve the ideal length for the infant. The finished bag measures approximately 48cm (19 inches) in circumference at the top edge and 50cm (20 inches) in length, making it a perfectly proportioned accessory for newborns and young babies.

Techniques and Construction

This beginner-friendly knitting pattern uses straightforward techniques suitable for knitters new to the craft. The design is highly adaptable, allowing knitters to easily customize the overall length of the finished cocoon bag to suit individual preferences. The stripe pattern can also be modified by adjusting both the number of stripes and their individual widths, giving crafters creative flexibility within a simple framework. The rolled top edge serves a functional purpose, allowing the cocoon to be folded down to achieve the correct fit for different baby sizes.

Stitches Used

The Jayden pattern is worked primarily in stocking stitch, the fundamental knit stitch that creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for baby garments. This basic stitch is worked consistently throughout the piece, making it accessible for beginner knitters while producing a professional-looking finished product.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for 8ply yarn (also known as DK weight), specifically Creative Basics Esther in two coordinating colors. The yarn requirements are modest: one 100g ball of the first color (aqua) and one 100g ball of the second color (green), with each ball providing approximately 220 meters of yardage. Actual quantities may vary depending on individual knitting tension and yarn type. Knitters will also need a set of 4.00mm double-pointed knitting needles (UK size 8, US size 6) and a wool needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 10cm (4 inches) when working stocking stitch on 4.00mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is important for ensuring the cocoon bag reaches the intended finished dimensions and fits properly.
