Product Description
This is a quick and easy bag to make. It's perfect for your small, take-along projects. The bag is 7 inches (17.8cm) high, and the square bottom is 5 inches x 5 inches (12.7cm square). To close the bag, simply push the longer strap through the loop made by the shorter strap. It can, then, be worn on your wrist. Gauge is not really important; however, you will see that I used a smaller hook size in order to create a dense fabric for the bag.
Stitches used--chain, single crochet, double crochet, triple crochet, slip stitch.
Japanese Knot Project Bag by Julie Blagojevich
What is Being Made
The Japanese Knot Project Bag is a crochet project bag designed by Julie Blagojevich. This intermediate-level bag is constructed using a worsted weight yarn and features a distinctive textured surface created through strategic stitch placement. The bag is worked from the bottom up, beginning with a foundation chain and building through alternating rows to create the finished piece.
Crochet Techniques Used
This project employs fundamental crochet construction methods combined with textural variation techniques. The bag utilizes a foundational chain stitch to establish the base width, then builds the body through alternating rows of different stitch types. A key technique featured in this design is the strategic placement of triple crochet stitches on the wrong side, which creates a visual and tactile texture by allowing these taller stitches to pop forward to the right side of the work. This creates the distinctive dimensional surface characteristic of the Japanese Knot design. The piece measures 5 inches in length through the repetition of patterned rows before additional shaping and finishing techniques are applied.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (Ch) – used to establish the foundation and turning chains
- Single crochet (Sc) – creates a tight, stable base fabric and frames the textural elements
- Triple crochet (Tr) – also called treble crochet, these tall stitches are worked on the wrong side to create dimensional texture on the right side
- Slip stitch (Sl st) – used for joining and finishing
- Double crochet (Dc) – included in the abbreviation guide for reference
Materials
The Japanese Knot Project Bag is created using Filatura Di Crosa Fancy Tempo yarn in color 34 (Aquarium). The pattern requires 2 balls of yarn, with each ball containing 115 yards, providing a total of 230 yards for the completed project. A size D crochet hook is used to work the yarn. A darning needle is required for finishing and weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
