Jaecar Hat: A Beanie with Slouch

What is Being Made

The Jaecar is a colour work beanie designed by Tracey Lee that features a distinctive slouchy silhouette. This seamless knit hat is worked from the crown downward in the round, creating a unified construction without seams. The design incorporates colour work elements throughout, allowing crafters to use multiple colours or select just two colours to create their preferred aesthetic. The hat is intentionally designed to be worn with negative ease at the band and generous slouch, making it a relaxed, comfortable style suitable for the whole family.

Techniques Used

The Jaecar employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished design. Seamless in-the-round construction is the primary method, worked from crown to band using circular needles or double-pointed needles. Colour work is integrated throughout the pattern, allowing for creative colour combinations. The pattern features decreases worked from the crown to shape the hat, and the band is worked in ribbing to create definition and ensure a snug fit. The design can be customized by adjusting length to reduce slouch if desired, demonstrating the flexibility of the construction method.

Stitches Used

The Jaecar pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with colour work techniques. The main stitches employed include:

  • Knit (K) – the primary stitch forming the fabric
  • Purl (P) – used in the ribbed band
  • Kfb (Knit front and back) – an increase stitch that creates texture by knitting into both the front and back loops of a single stitch, with colour A used for the back stitch and colour B for the forward stitch
  • M1 (Make 1) – an increase worked using the backwards loop method, consistently using colour A throughout

The pattern also incorporates stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, and follows a chart-based colour work design for visual guidance.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Jaecar is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that creates a fabric with good drape and structure suitable for colour work. The pattern requires four needle sizes to accommodate different sections of the hat. 4.5mm (US7) circular needles or double-pointed needles are used for the main colour work sections, while 3.5mm (US4) circular needles or double-pointed needles are used for the ribbed band. Crafters may adjust needle size as needed to achieve the specified gauge. The recommended gauge is 23 stitches and 26 rows over 10 centimetres (4 inches) when measured on the larger needles in the colour work pattern.

Sizing and Finished Dimensions

The Jaecar is available in four sizes to accommodate different head sizes:

  • S (Small): approximately 43cm/17 inches finished circumference
  • M (Medium): approximately 50cm/19.5 inches finished circumference
  • L (Large): approximately 55cm/22 inches finished circumference
  • XL (Extra Large): approximately 63cm/25 inches finished circumference

The pattern as written creates a hat length of approximately 25 centimetres (10 inches), which provides the characteristic slouch. The instructions note that the length can be adjusted shorter to reduce the amount of slouch if preferred.

Difficulty Level

The Jaecar is rated as an intermediate knitting project. This difficulty level reflects the requirement to work seamlessly in the round, manage colour work techniques, and follow a chart-based pattern. Knitters should be comfortable with basic increases, decreases, and working with multiple colours before attempting this design.
