Sirdar Snuggly Sweetie & Snuggly DK Baby Jacket – Pattern 4909

This delightful baby jacket knitting pattern (Sirdar 4909) is designed for little ones from birth through to 2 years old, making it a wonderfully versatile project for new arrivals and growing babies alike. The pattern produces a cosy, textured jacket that combines two very different Sirdar yarns to create a garment with real visual and tactile appeal — perfect as a handmade gift or an everyday wardrobe staple for a baby.

What Is Being Made

The pattern creates a baby jacket worked in three sizes to fit chest measurements of 41 cm (16 in), 46 cm (18 in), and 51 cm (20 in), corresponding to ages 0–6 months, 6–12 months, and 1–2 years. The finished actual measurements range from 45 cm to 55 cm across the chest, with a full length of 24 cm to 32 cm and an adjustable sleeve length of 15 cm to 20 cm, giving knitters some flexibility to tailor the fit as needed. The jacket fastens with 5 or 6 buttons depending on the size, giving it a neat, classic finish.

Yarns and Materials Used

What makes this pattern particularly special is its creative use of two contrasting Sirdar yarns worked together to produce a striking textured effect:

  • Sirdar Snuggly Sweetie (shade 415) — a super chunky novelty yarn featuring built-in pompoms along its length. This yarn is used for the main body of the jacket and is the source of its distinctive, playful texture. You will need 1 x 200g ball for the two smaller sizes and 2 x 200g balls for the largest size.
  • Sirdar Snuggly DK (shade 251) — a smooth DK weight yarn used for contrast detail and finishing elements such as the button bands. You will need 1 x 50g ball across all three sizes.

In addition to the yarns, the following materials are required:

  • 1 pair of 4mm (UK 8 / USA 6) knitting needles — used for the main fabric
  • 1 pair of 3¼mm (UK 10 / USA 3) knitting needles — used for finer detail sections
  • Stitch holders for managing live stitches during construction
  • 5 buttons (sizes 0–6 months and 6–12 months) or 6 buttons (size 1–2 years)
  • A reel of sewing thread in a matching colour for attaching buttons securely

Techniques and Construction

This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for knitters who are relatively new to garment construction but are comfortable with basic knitting skills. The straightforward shaping and stitch patterns mean that even those who have not knitted a garment before will find this an achievable and rewarding project.

The jacket is constructed using conventional flat knitting techniques, working the pieces separately and seaming them together. Stitch holders are used to keep stitches live while other sections are worked — a standard technique in garment knitting that allows for neat neckline and shoulder shaping.

Stitches Used

Two primary stitch patterns are used throughout this jacket, each suited to one of the two yarns:

  • Garter stitch — used with the Sirdar Snuggly Sweetie yarn. Garter stitch is the simplest of all knitted fabrics, created by knitting every row. It produces a squishy, reversible fabric with a ridged texture. When worked with the pompom-laden Snuggly Sweetie yarn, garter stitch allows the decorative pompoms to sit prominently on the surface, creating the jacket's signature fluffy, playful look. The tension for this yarn is 8 stitches (4 pompoms) and 16 rows to 10 cm over garter stitch on
