Jacket, Blanket, Hat & Mitts in Stylecraft Wondersoft Prints DK – Pattern 9479

This Stylecraft pattern 9479 is a collection of four easy-knit baby and toddler designs worked in Wondersoft Prints DK yarn. The set includes a classic baby jacket, a cosy blanket, a snug hat, and a pair of mitts — making it an ideal all-in-one gift or layette collection. Sizes range generously from premature right through to 2–3 years, covering chest measurements of 31 cm to 56 cm (12 in to 22 in), so the patterns grow with the child from the earliest days. The difficulty level is rated as beginner, making this an excellent choice for newer knitters who want to build confidence while creating something genuinely useful and beautiful.

The Jacket

The baby jacket is worked in pieces and features a neat ribbed welt and cuffs combined with a smooth stocking stitch body and sleeves. The front bands incorporate a classic K2, P2 rib pattern that provides structure and a tidy finish. Shaping is introduced at the neck edge on both the left and right fronts, with stitches decreased at regular intervals to create a clean, professional neckline. Sleeve length and full garment length are graded across all six sizes, from a full length of 20 cm (8 in) for premature babies up to 38 cm (15 in) for the 2–3 year size, with sleeve lengths ranging from 8 cm (3 in) to 24 cm (9½ in).

The colourway shown in the pattern uses Cinderella 1339, one of the characterful printed shades available in the Wondersoft Prints DK range. The jacket requires 1 to 2 balls of 100g Wondersoft Prints DK depending on the size being made.

The Blanket

The blanket is a single flat piece measuring 61 x 66 cm (24 x 26 in) — a practical pram or cot size that is generous enough to wrap and tuck. As a straightforward project worked in one piece, it is particularly well suited to beginner knitters looking to practise consistent tension over a larger area. The blanket shown is worked in Humpty Dumpty 1728, another of the soft, nursery-inspired printed colourways in the Wondersoft Prints DK range. It requires 2 balls of 100g Wondersoft Prints DK.

The Hat and Mitts

The hat and mitts are sized to fit the average head and hand for each age indicated, from premature through to 2–3 years. These smaller accessories are quick to knit and make ideal standalone gifts or perfect companions to the jacket and blanket. Like the blanket, they are shown in Humpty Dumpty 1728, and each size requires just 1 ball of 100g Wondersoft Prints DK for the hat and mitts together (with no ball required for the largest size mitts, as noted in the pattern).

Techniques and Stitches Used

  • Thumb method cast on — used throughout for a neat, elastic edge suitable for baby garments
  • K2, P2 rib — used for welts, cuffs, and front bands on the jacket, providing stretch and structure
  • Stocking stitch (st-st) — the main fabric of the jacket body and sleeves, as well as other elements of the set
  • Rib decreases (rib2tog) — worked at the transition between rib and stocking stitch to reduce stitches neatly before the body begins
  • Neck shaping decreases (K2tog) — used at the neck edge of the jacket fronts, worked at regular row intervals to shape the neckline gradually
  • Flat knitting — all pieces are worked flat on straight needles and seamed together
