Jack Baby Overalls with Boat Motif
What is Being Made
Jack is a pair of knitted baby overalls featuring embroidered boat motifs on the right leg and chest. Designed by Jennifer Lee, these overalls are suitable for newborns through 12-month-old babies, with the pattern photographed in size 3 months. The design combines functional knitwear with decorative embroidery, creating a charming garment perfect for babies and young toddlers.
Sizes and Fit
The pattern includes four sizes spanning from newborn to 12 months:
- 0 months: 35cm (13¾ inches) chest, 28cm (11 inches) length
- 3 months: 40cm (15¾ inches) chest, 32cm (12½ inches) length
- 6 months: 45cm (17¾ inches) chest, 37cm (14½ inches) length
- 12 months: 52.5cm (20¾ inches) chest, 43cm (17 inches) length
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Jack is rated as an Easy difficulty pattern, making it suitable for beginner knitters. The garment is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for baby clothing. The primary stitch used is stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for comfortable baby wear. Garter stitch (knit every row) is also employed in the pattern, likely for ribbed edges or structural elements. Additional techniques include increasing stitches for shaping, slipping stitches, and passing slipped stitches over for decreasing. The embroidered boat motifs are added after knitting is complete using a wool needle for embroidery work.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for Lincraft DK 8ply yarn, a medium-weight yarn ideal for baby garments. Yarn requirements vary by size: the main colour requires 1 ball for sizes 0–6 months and 2 balls for size 12 months (100g balls with approximately 266 metres per ball). The first contrast colour (C1) requires 1 ball for sizes 0–3 months and 1 ball for sizes 6–12 months. A second contrast colour (C2) is needed only in scraps for the embroidered boat motifs. Exact quantities may vary depending on individual knitting tension and yarn type.
Needles and Equipment
Construction requires a pair of 4.00mm knitting needles (UK size 8, US size 6). Additional equipment includes a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction, a wool needle for sewing seams and embroidery work, hat elastic for securing the overalls, and 2 buttons for fastening.
Tension
The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm (4 inches) measured over stocking stitch using 4.00mm needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for the garment to fit the intended sizes.
Design Features
The overalls feature decorative embroidered boat motifs positioned on the right leg and chest, adding a charming nautical theme to the practical baby garment. The combination of knitted construction with embroidered details creates visual interest while maintaining the simplicity appropriate for beginner knitters.
