What is Being Made
A pair of socks featuring a stranded colorwork design with decorative flowers and butterflies. The pattern offers versatility in customization, allowing knitters to add as many stripes of flowers as desired in the leg section. Available in four sizes: XS (56 stitches), S (60 stitches), M (64 stitches), and L (72 stitches), making this design suitable for a range of foot sizes.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using knitting as the primary technique. The design incorporates stranded colorwork, a traditional method where multiple yarn colors are carried across the fabric to create intricate patterns. Stranded colorwork requires managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously while knitting, producing a dense, durable fabric ideal for socks that will receive regular wear.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern employs standard sock construction techniques using stockinette stitch as the base fabric, with stranded colorwork motifs integrated throughout. The floral and butterfly designs are worked using the stranded method, where unused yarn colors are carried (or "floated") behind the active stitches. This intermediate-level technique creates visually striking patterns while maintaining structural integrity in the finished socks.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project uses 3-ply fingering weight yarn, the standard weight for sock knitting. The primary color is worked in Garnstudio Drops Flora (65% wool, 35% alpaca blend, 210 meters per 50 grams) in Beige 07, requiring approximately 60 grams. Contrast colors are worked in Garnstudio Drops Fabel (75% wool, 25% polyamide blend, 210 meters per 50 grams), including Rust 110, Guacamole 151, and Dark Pink 109, each requiring approximately 10 to 15 grams depending on the specific color.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational sock-knitting experience and comfort with managing multiple yarn colors. The stranded colorwork technique requires attention to tension and yarn management, making it an engaging project for developing advanced colorwork skills.
