Isbryder Icebreaker Sweater by HelstrupDesign

What Is Being Made

Isbryder is an advanced-level knitted sweater designed by HelstrupDesign, with the name meaning 'icebreaker' in Danish. This downloadable PDF knitting pattern offers six size options ranging from Small through XXXL, with finished chest widths from 107 to 151 centimeters and lengths from 65 to 77 centimeters. The sweater is constructed using a two-color colorwork technique, combining a main color with a contrasting accent color for visual interest and depth.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting project worked primarily in the round using circular needles, which creates a seamless construction ideal for sweater bodies. The pattern employs colorwork knitting, a technique where two yarn colors are worked simultaneously to create patterned designs across the fabric. Knitters will need to manage tension and yarn floats carefully when working with multiple colors, making this an appropriate challenge for advanced-level knitters. The construction method involves casting on stitches and joining for knitting in the round, which eliminates the need for seaming and produces a more polished finished garment.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric base for this sweater. Stockinette stitch in the round (knit every round) produces the characteristic V-pattern texture on the right side of the fabric. The gauge for this pattern is 18 stitches and 27 rows per 10 by 10 centimeters in stockinette stitch, which knitters must match precisely for accurate sizing. The colorwork elements are integrated into this stockinette base, requiring knitters to carry yarn floats on the wrong side of the fabric when switching between the main and contrast colors.

Materials and Tools

The Isbryder sweater is designed for aran-weight yarn, specifically wool with a yardage of approximately 90 meters per 50 grams. The pattern recommends yarns such as Jamieson's Shetland Heather, Peer Gynt from Sandnes, or Mor Aase from Sandnes, with the pictured sample knitted in yarn from Sandnes. Yardage requirements vary by size: the main color requires 400 to 650 grams depending on size selection, while the contrast color requires 100 to 250 grams. Knitters will need 3½ millimeter circular needles in two lengths—one 60 or 80 centimeter needle for the body and one 40 centimeter needle (or alternatively 3½ millimeter double-pointed needles) for smaller circumference sections such as sleeves or necklines. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends after completion. Achieving the correct gauge is essential, as every knitter's tension is unique; selecting the appropriate needle size to match the specified gauge of 18 stitches per 10 centimeters in stockinette stitch ensures the finished sweater will meet the intended measurements.
