Irish Cowboy is a neck-warmer featuring a cable-and-bobble pattern on a background of reverse stockinette and moss stitch, bordered by twist cables. It is knit flat, then joined by seaming the cast-off end to the side adjacent to the cast-on end. This creates a shape that effectively keeps the neck warm while wearing a v-necked jacket. The cable trim is extended on one side and seamed to the cast-on edge to complete the finish.

Irish Cowboy Cowl by Jessie McKitrick

What Is Being Made

The Irish Cowboy is a neck-warmer cowl designed to pair with v-necked jackets and Western wear. This knit accessory features a distinctive bandana-like construction that combines traditional Irish knitting techniques with a style inspired by the Calgary Stampede rodeo culture. The cowl is knit flat and then seamed to create a tubular shape that provides warmth around the neck while maintaining a relaxed, versatile fit suitable for fall and cooler seasons.

Construction and Design Details

The Irish Cowboy uses an innovative seaming technique that joins the cast-off end to the side adjacent to the cast-on end, creating its unique shape and drape. A cable trim is extended on one side and seamed to the cast-on edge to complete the finished piece. This construction method results in a cowl that sits comfortably over the head and neck, offering both style and functionality for layering with jackets and outdoor wear.

Stitch Patterns and Techniques

This advanced knitting project combines multiple stitch techniques to create visual interest and texture:

  • Cable and bobble pattern forms the primary decorative element
  • Reverse stockinette stitch provides a smooth background that contrasts with the textured cables
  • Moss stitch adds additional texture and dimension to the design
  • Flat knitting followed by seaming creates the final three-dimensional cowl shape

Yarn and Materials

The Irish Cowboy is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight option that provides good stitch definition for the intricate cable and bobble patterns while remaining lightweight enough for comfortable neck wear. Knitters will need appropriate needles for DK yarn and a tapestry needle for seaming the cast-off and cast-on edges together.

Finished Sizes

The pattern is available in three sizes to accommodate different head circumferences:

  • Size S: 53 cm (21 inches) head circumference; main panel length 56 cm (22 inches) before seaming
  • Size M: 56 cm (22 inches) head circumference; main panel length 58.5 cm (23 inches) before seaming
  • Size L: 58.5 cm (23 inches) head circumference; main panel length 61 cm (24 inches) before seaming

Skill Level

Rated as an advanced knitting project, the Irish Cowboy requires solid experience with cable stitches, bobble stitches, and seaming techniques. The combination of multiple stitch patterns and the precision required for the seaming construction make this cowl suitable for experienced knitters looking to expand their skills with traditional Irish knitting motifs.

Design Inspiration

Created by designer Jessie McKitrick, the Irish Cowboy draws inspiration from the cultural blend of Irish heritage and Western rodeo tradition, specifically referencing the Calgary Stampede and the style choices of Gaelic Football players who have relocated from Ireland to Alberta. The cowl's bandana-like appearance makes it an ideal accessory for those seeking to combine traditional Irish knitwear with contemporary Western fashion.
