Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - West Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater designed using the intarsia knitting technique. The garment features a charted intarsia design (the West Moniker Chart) integrated into the main body of the sweater. The pattern provides instructions for multiple sizes, making it suitable for children at different stages of development. The sweater is constructed with a classic fitted silhouette, including a shaped back and front, armhole shaping, and ribbed edging for structure and comfort.
Knitting Techniques Used
Intarsia Knitting: The primary technique featured in this pattern is intarsia, a method of incorporating large, multi-colored designs or motifs into knitted fabric. Unlike Fair Isle or jacquard techniques that carry yarn across the back, intarsia uses separate lengths of yarn for each color block, creating a smooth, single-layer fabric with distinct color sections. This technique is particularly effective for larger pictorial designs like the West Moniker Chart used in this sweater.
Stockinette Stitch: The main body of the sweater is worked in stockinette stitch (st-st), which creates the classic smooth, V-patterned fabric commonly seen in fitted knitwear. This stitch is worked throughout the front and back pieces, providing an ideal canvas for the intarsia charted design.
Ribbed Edging: The pattern employs 2x2 ribbing (alternating knit 2, purl 2) at the cuffs and lower edge. Ribbing provides elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape, particularly important for children's wear that needs to stretch comfortably around the wrists, neck, and waist.
Armhole Shaping: The pattern includes structured armhole shaping achieved through strategic decreases at the beginning of rows, creating a properly fitted sleeve opening that allows for comfortable arm movement.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch used throughout the stockinette stitch sections
- Purl (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create the 2x2 ribbed edging
- Purl Two Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape the armholes and create fitted shaping along the garment edges
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch pattern combining knit and purl rows to create smooth fabric
- 2x2 Ribbing: A combination of knit and purl stitches worked in a repeating pattern for elastic edging
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yarn weight that creates a finely detailed fabric ideal for children's garments. The pattern requires two needle sizes: 2¾mm needles for the initial cast-on and ribbed sections, and 3¼mm needles for the main stockinette stitch body. The use of two needle sizes is a common technique to ensure that ribbed sections remain elastic and properly fitted while the main fabric has appropriate drape and structure.
The pattern includes a stitch holder for holding stitches during construction, particularly useful when shaping necklines and managing the front and back pieces separately.
Pattern Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic stitches involved are fundamental, the intarsia technique requires careful attention to color changes and chart reading. Knitters must be comfortable following a charted design, managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously, and executing precise shaping decreases. The multiple size options and detailed shaping instructions also contribute to the intermediate classification.
Design Features
The sweater includes multiple size options with varying stitch counts and row lengths, allowing for proper fit across different children's sizes. The garment features classic construction with separate front and back pieces, armhole shaping for a fitted silhouette, and ribbed edging for comfort and structure. The intarsia West Moniker Chart serves as the focal design element, creating visual interest while the stockinette stitch background allows the charted motif to stand out clearly.
