The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Taylor Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is an intermediate-level knitted children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork design. The pattern uses the Taylor Moniker Chart as its primary decorative element, allowing crafters to personalize the garment with a child's name or initials through the intarsia technique. The sweater is constructed in pieces (back, front, and sleeves) using a combination of ribbed and stockinette stitch sections.
What Is Being Made
A custom children's pullover sweater with intarsia charted design work. The garment features a classic construction with a ribbed neckline, cuffs, and hem, combined with a main body worked in stockinette stitch. The intarsia chart allows for personalization, making this an ideal project for creating named or monogrammed pieces for children.
Techniques Used
- Intarsia colorwork – The primary technique, using the Taylor Moniker Chart to incorporate personalized text or initials into the sweater design
- Stockinette stitch – Used throughout the main body for a smooth, classic fabric
- Ribbed knit – 2x2 rib pattern applied to neckline, cuffs, and hem for elasticity and structure
- Shaping techniques – Armhole decreases worked at the beginning of rows to create proper sleeve cap fit
- Stitch holder method – Used to hold stitches for later finishing, particularly at the neckline
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k) – Primary stitch for stockinette sections
- Purl stitch (p) – Used in ribbing and for creating reverse stockinette details
- 2x2 rib – Alternating knit and purl stitches in groups of two, creating elastic ribbed fabric
- Purl 2 together (p2tog) – Decrease stitch used for armhole shaping and other decreases
- Stockinette stitch (st-st) – Knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows, creating the smooth main fabric
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, providing a lightweight, durable fabric suitable for children's wear. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the main stockinette sections and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed sections, with the smaller needles creating a tighter gauge for elastic ribbing. The pattern includes multiple size options with varying stitch counts and row counts, accommodating different children's sizes. Yarn amounts are specified based on achieving the correct tension with the recommended yarn and needles.
Pattern Structure
The sweater is worked in separate pieces beginning with the back panel, cast on using the thumb method with 70 to 102 stitches depending on size. The back features an initial 2x2 ribbed section followed by stockinette stitch body rows, then armhole shaping through decreases at row edges. The front is worked similarly with the intarsia chart incorporated into the stockinette stitch section, allowing the personalized moniker design to be visible on the finished garment. Sleeve and finishing details follow standard sweater construction methods.
