Product Description
This chart is part of my Knitting/Yarn/Crochet puns series. I thought with people doing more crafts these days, it would be fun to have something to show off. If you like this one check my designer's profile for others. Click collections where I have grouped my designs together.
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for Chunky sweater sizes 28" to 54" and the "Sexy And You Know Knit" chart. The chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. Check my Instarsia designer profile for all patterns and chart.
All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Sleeper Knitter Chart Adults Sweater
What Is Being Made
This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for knitting an adult sweater using the intarsia technique. The design is created by Instarsia and is classified as an intermediate-level knitting project suitable for knitters with some experience in colorwork and garment construction.
Intarsia Technique Explained
Intarsia is an advanced colorwork method that allows knitters to incorporate large blocks of contrasting colors into their designs without carrying yarn across the back of the work. This technique differs from stranded colorwork because each color section uses a separate ball of yarn. When working with different balls of yarn, the color to be used should be twisted round the color just used to link the colors together and avoid holes. This twisting action at color changes prevents gaps from forming in the fabric and creates a seamless appearance on the finished garment.
Stitches and Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques including:
- Knit stitch (k) – the basic stitch that forms the foundation of the fabric
- Purl stitch (p) – used in combination with knit stitches to create texture and structure
- Stocking stitch – the primary stitch pattern, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, classic fabric
- Increases (inc) – including make one stitch (m1), created by picking up the loop between the last and next stitch and working into the back of this loop to add stitches for shaping
- Decreases (dec) – used to reduce stitch counts for garment shaping
- Intarsia colorwork – the signature technique for this design, allowing large color blocks to be integrated into the sweater pattern
Materials Required
This pattern calls for chunky weight yarn in quantities based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn type are used. Knitters will need two pairs of needles: 1 pair of 6mm (UK size 4 / USA size 10) knitting needles for the main fabric and 1 pair of 5mm (UK size 6 / USA size 8) knitting needles for ribbed sections. Additionally, 2 stitch holders are required for holding stitches during construction.
Tension and Gauge
Achieving the correct tension is essential for this project. The pattern specifies 14 stitches and 20 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch on 6mm needles or the size required to give correct tension. Knitters should always check their tension before beginning the sweater. If your swatch produces fewer stitches than specified, use a thinner needle; if it produces more stitches, use a thicker needle. This adjustment ensures the finished sweater will match the intended dimensions.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern that includes a chart-based design system, making it accessible for visual learners and those experienced with reading knitting charts. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including alt (alternate), beg (beginning), cm (centimetres), cont (continue), dec (decrease), foll (following), g (grammes), in (inches), inc (increase), k (knit), mm (millimetres), p (purl), rem (remaining), rep (repeat), rs (right side), st(s) (stitch/stitches), tog (together), and ws (wrong side).
