This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Rick Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for knitting a children's sweater featuring an intarsia chart design. The garment is worked primarily in stockinette stitch with ribbed welts, offering an intermediate-level knitting project suitable for crafters with foundational knitting skills and experience working with stitch patterns.
What is Being Made
A pullover children's sweater with a Rick Moniker intarsia chart design. The pattern includes pieces for the back, front, and sleeves, with multiple size options to accommodate different children's measurements. The sweater features a classic construction with shaped armholes and ribbed edges for structure and comfort.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia Colorwork: The Rick Moniker chart is worked using the intarsia technique, which involves knitting with multiple colors to create a pictorial design. This method requires careful color management and is more advanced than simple stranding.
- Armhole Shaping: The pattern includes structured armhole decreases worked over multiple rows to create a fitted sleeve cap.
- Ribbed Welts: Both the cuffs and hem feature 2x2 ribbing (knit 2, purl 2 pattern) to provide elasticity and a finished appearance.
- Stitch Holder Technique: Stitches are placed on holders during construction, allowing for later pickup and finishing of neckline or other details.
- Tension-Based Sizing: The pattern provides multiple size options with row and stitch counts that scale based on specified tension, ensuring proper fit across different children's sizes.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, flat fabric ideal for displaying the intarsia chart design.
- 2x2 Ribbing (2x2 rib): A knit-purl combination worked at the cuffs and hem, providing stretch and recovery.
- Decreases: Pattern includes p2tog (purl 2 together) decreases for shaping armholes and other fitted areas.
- Knit and Purl: Basic stitches combined to create the ribbed sections and structure of the garment.
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides a lightweight, durable fabric suitable for children's garments. The pattern specifies the use of 2¾mm needles for the main body work in stockinette stitch and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed welts. The yarn amounts are calculated based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn weight are used, so accurate gauge swatching is essential before beginning the project.
Pattern Structure
The pattern provides multiple size options with scaled stitch and row counts. The back piece is cast on with 70 stitches and worked through ribbing before transitioning to the main stockinette stitch section. The front follows similar construction with the intarsia chart incorporated into the specified rows. Armhole shaping is worked symmetrically on both front and back pieces, with decreases continuing until the armholes reach the specified depth of 10 to 14 centimeters depending on size.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern requires solid foundational knitting skills including comfort with gauge, shaping techniques, and the ability to follow a chart. The intarsia colorwork element adds complexity beyond basic stitch patterns, making it suitable for knitters who have completed several projects and are ready to explore color techniques.
