Intarsia - Paul Moniker Chart Children's Sweater

What is Being Made

This is a children's sweater pattern designed using the intarsia technique, featuring the Paul Moniker chart as a focal design element. The garment is constructed with a classic pullover silhouette, including a shaped back and front, armhole shaping, and ribbed edging details. The pattern is available in multiple size options to accommodate different children's measurements.

Techniques Used

Intarsia: The primary technique featured in this pattern is intarsia, a color-work method where different colored yarn sections are worked into the fabric using separate bobbins or lengths of yarn for each color area. This technique creates a smooth, flat fabric on the reverse side compared to stranded colorwork, making it ideal for large design charts like the Paul Moniker chart included with this pattern.

Stockinette Stitch: The main body of the sweater is worked throughout in stockinette stitch (st-st), which creates a smooth, V-textured fabric that provides an excellent canvas for displaying the intarsia design.

Ribbed Edging: The sweater features 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2 ribbing) at the cuffs and hem, which provides elasticity and a finished appearance. This ribbing is worked over multiple rows to create a substantial edge that helps the garment maintain its shape.

Armhole and Neckline Shaping: The pattern includes structured shaping at the armholes with decreases worked at each end of rows, creating a fitted sleeve cap area. The front features additional shaping details for neckline construction.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K): Used throughout the stockinette stitch sections and ribbing
  • Purl (P): Used in the 2x2 rib pattern and reverse stockinette sections
  • Purl 2 Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used for armhole shaping and waist shaping details
  • Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch structure throughout the body and sleeves
  • 2x2 Rib: A combination of knit and purl stitches creating an elastic, textured edge

Materials and Specifications

This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is a lightweight yarn suitable for children's garments. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the main body work in stockinette stitch and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed sections, with the smaller needle size creating a tighter gauge for the elastic ribbing.

The yarn amounts are based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn weight are used. Knitters should verify their gauge before beginning the project to ensure proper fit across the multiple available size options.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While stockinette stitch and ribbing are fundamental techniques, the intarsia colorwork method requires careful management of multiple yarn colors and bobbins, making this pattern suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques.

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern created by independent designer Instarsia, making it accessible for immediate download and printing for reference during knitting.
