Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Mya Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater pattern featuring intarsia colorwork design. The garment includes a structured back and front with shaped armholes and ribbed edging, designed to be customized with a child's moniker or name through the intarsia charting technique.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project that utilizes intarsia as its primary decorative technique. Intarsia is a method of knitting with multiple colors to create a pictorial or personalized design, where different colored yarns are used to fill in specific areas of the pattern as indicated by a chart. This technique differs from stranded colorwork as each color section uses separate yarn bobbins, allowing for larger, more defined color blocks without carrying yarn across the back of the work.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch used throughout the main body of the sweater for a smooth, classic fabric appearance
- 2x2 Ribbing: A knit-purl combination (K2, P2 repeat) used for the cuffs and edging to create elasticity and a fitted finish
- Purl Two Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping the armholes and creating fitted seams
- Knit Stitches: Standard knit stitches form the foundation of the pattern
Construction and Shaping Details
The sweater is constructed in pieces with separate back and front panels. The back begins with casting on 70 [78:86:94:102] stitches depending on size, with ribbed edging worked first before transitioning to stockinette stitch. The front follows a similar construction method. Armhole shaping is achieved through strategic decreasing at each end of rows, reducing stitches over multiple rows to create fitted sleeve openings. The pattern includes multiple size options with varying row counts and stitch counts to accommodate different children's sizes.
Materials and Needles
This pattern calls for 4-ply yarn weight, which creates a lightweight, refined fabric suitable for children's garments. Two needle sizes are required: 2¾mm needles for the ribbed sections and 3¼mm needles for the main stockinette stitch body. The yarn amounts specified are based on achieving the correct tension (gauge) as indicated in the pattern, making accurate gauge swatching essential before beginning the project.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic stitches are fundamental, the intarsia colorwork technique requires careful attention to the chart, proper yarn management with multiple bobbins, and precise stitch counting to ensure the personalized moniker design appears correctly. Additionally, the shaping instructions and multiple size options add complexity beyond beginner-level projects.
