Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Matt Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What Is Being Made
This is a children's sweater designed using the intarsia knitting technique. The garment features a charted design element (the Matt Moniker motif) incorporated into the body of the sweater. The pattern provides instructions for multiple sizes, making it suitable for children at different stages of growth.
Knitting Techniques Used
Intarsia Knitting: The primary technique featured in this pattern is intarsia, a method of color knitting where separate lengths of yarn are used for different colored sections of the design. Unlike stranding techniques that carry yarn across the back, intarsia creates a single-thickness fabric with clean color transitions, making it ideal for large design motifs like the Matt Moniker chart included in this pattern.
Shaping Methods: The sweater incorporates several shaping techniques including armhole decreases worked at each end of rows to create fitted sleeve openings. The pattern uses standard decrease methods to achieve the necessary shaping for a well-fitted children's garment.
Ribbed Edgings: The sweater features 2x2 ribbing (knit 2, purl 2 pattern) at the cuffs and hem, which provides elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape during wear and washing.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The main fabric throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knit surface
- 2x2 Ribbing: Alternating knit and purl stitches in a 2-2 pattern for edgings
- Purl Decreases (p2tog): Purl two stitches together for shaping on wrong-side rows
- Knit Stitches: Standard knit stitches forming the foundation of the stockinette fabric
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for displaying the intarsia chart details. The pattern calls for 2¾mm needles for the main fabric and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed sections, allowing for the slight gauge difference needed between ribbing and stockinette stitch.
Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn weight. Accurate gauge is particularly important in intarsia projects to ensure the charted design displays correctly and the finished garment fits as intended.
Pattern Difficulty
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic stitches are fundamental, the intarsia technique requires attention to color changes and managing multiple yarn lengths, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond complete beginners.
Size Range
The pattern provides multiple size options for children, with graduated measurements for back width, armhole depth, and sleeve length to accommodate different ages and sizes within the children's range.
