Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Maria Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater pattern featuring intarsia colorwork design. The garment is constructed with separate front and back pieces that are worked flat and assembled. The sweater includes ribbed cuffs and a fitted silhouette appropriate for young wearers, with the intarsia chart allowing for personalization through a child's name or moniker incorporated into the design.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project designed for intermediate-level knitters. The pattern requires familiarity with intarsia colorwork, a technique where different colored yarns are used to create a picture or pattern across the fabric. Intarsia differs from stranding in that each color section uses a separate ball or bobbin of yarn, preventing long floats across the back of the work and creating a smoother, flatter fabric ideal for displaying detailed designs like personalized names.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The sweater is primarily worked in stockinette stitch (st-st), which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric that serves as the ideal base for intarsia work. The cuffs and waistband are worked in 2x2 ribbing, a reversible elastic stitch pattern created by alternating knit and purl stitches in groups of two. This ribbing provides stretch and recovery at the edges.
Key construction techniques include:
- Casting on using the thumb method with 70-102 stitches depending on size
- Working ribbed edging before transitioning to stockinette stitch
- Armhole shaping achieved through decreases at each end of rows
- Stitch holder placement for later finishing of neckline or shoulder details
- Decreases such as p2tog (purl two together) for fitted shaping
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yarn weight that creates a refined, drapey fabric suitable for children's garments. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the main stockinette stitch sections and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed edging, following the standard practice of using slightly smaller needles for ribbing to maintain elasticity.
The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format, making it easy to reference while knitting. Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn weight, ensuring accurate sizing across the multiple size options included in the pattern.
Design Features
The intarsia chart is the signature feature of this sweater, allowing knitters to personalize the garment with a child's name or moniker. The chart-based approach means knitters follow a visual representation of the colorwork pattern row by row, integrating the personalized text seamlessly into the sweater's design during construction rather than adding it afterward.
