Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Frances Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater designed using the intarsia knitting technique. The pattern provides instructions for creating a fitted pullover garment with shaping at the armholes and ribbed detailing. The sweater is worked in pieces (back and front) that are subsequently assembled, making it suitable for intermediate knitters who have experience with garment construction and color work.
Intarsia Technique
Intarsia knitting is a method of incorporating multiple colors or personalized designs into a knitted fabric by working with separate lengths of yarn for different colored sections. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia creates a single-thickness fabric without floats running across the back, making it ideal for children's garments where comfort and wearability are priorities. The "Frances Moniker Chart" referenced in the pattern name indicates that this design features a personalized element—likely a name or monogram—that knitters can work into the front of the sweater using the provided chart.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The sweater is constructed using fundamental knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques:
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch used throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, flat fabric with a recognizable V-pattern texture
- 2x2 Ribbing: A knit-2, purl-2 rib pattern worked at the cuffs and lower edge, providing elasticity and a finished appearance
- Decreases: The pattern employs purl 2 together (p2tog) decreases strategically placed to shape the armholes and create proper garment fit
- Cast-on and Cast-off: The pattern begins with casting on 70 stitches using the thumb method, a fundamental technique for creating an initial row of stitches
Shaping and Sizing
The pattern is written for multiple sizes, indicated by the bracketed numbers throughout the instructions (for example, [25:29:29:33] represents different stitch counts for different size options). The sweater features armhole shaping achieved through decreasing one stitch at each end of every row over several rows, creating a tapered sleeve cap opening. The front and back pieces are shaped identically at the armholes before diverging for neckline shaping on the front piece.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yarn weight that creates a refined, durable fabric suitable for children's wear. The pattern requires two needle sizes to create contrast and structure:
- 2¾mm needles: Used for the ribbed cuff sections, the smaller needle size creates tighter, more elastic ribbing
- 3¼mm needles: Used for the main stockinette stitch body, allowing the yarn to work at its intended gauge and creating the proper fabric drape
Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn weight, ensuring that yardage requirements align with the pattern's sizing across all included size options.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have solid foundational skills including casting on, working basic stitches, reading charts, managing decreases, and assembling garment pieces. The addition of intarsia colorwork and personalized charting elevates the complexity beyond beginner level, requiring attention to color changes and chart reading while maintaining consistent tension and stitch quality.
