Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Eva Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is a children's sweater pattern designed using the intarsia technique, which allows for the creation of detailed colorwork designs incorporating a custom chart. The sweater is suitable for knitters with intermediate skill level and offers multiple size options to accommodate different ages and measurements.
What Is Being Made
A knitted children's sweater featuring a structured design with ribbed edges and a fitted silhouette. The garment includes a back piece, front piece with intarsia colorwork detail, and sleeves (referenced through armhole and sleeve cap shaping). The sweater is constructed using a combination of ribbed and stockinette stitch sections, with the intarsia chart incorporated into the front panel for visual interest and personalization.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia Colorwork: The primary decorative technique, allowing for the integration of the Eva Moniker Chart into the sweater front. This method involves using separate yarn lengths or bobbins for different colored sections, creating a smooth, non-stranded fabric.
- Ribbed Edging: 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2) is used at the cuffs and hem for elasticity and structure.
- Armhole Shaping: Decreases are worked at each end of rows to create fitted armholes and proper sleeve cap placement.
- Stitch Holder Technique: Stitches are held for later use, commonly applied to neckline shaping and sleeve cap construction.
- Decrease Methods: Purl two together (p2tog) decreases are used for shaping, maintaining a neat appearance on the purl side.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, flat fabric with a recognizable V-pattern on the knit side.
- 2x2 Rib: A combination of knit and purl stitches alternating in groups of two, used for cuffs and hem ribbing to provide stretch and recovery.
- Knit Stitch (k): The foundation stitch used in combination with purl stitches.
- Purl Stitch (p): Used in ribbed sections and for shaping decreases.
- Purl Two Together (p2tog): A left-leaning decrease stitch used for armhole and waist shaping.
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is a lightweight, versatile yarn suitable for children's garments. The pattern specifies the use of 2¾mm needles for the main body sections worked in stockinette stitch and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed edging, allowing for the proper gauge and fabric density. The yarn amounts provided in the pattern are based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn weight are used, ensuring accurate yardage calculations for each size option.
Pattern Structure and Sizing
The sweater is offered in multiple size options, as indicated by the bracketed measurements throughout the pattern (such as [25:29:29:33] sts and [78:86:94:102] sts). This allows the pattern to accommodate children of varying ages and sizes. Row counts are also graduated by size, with smaller sizes requiring fewer rows than larger sizes, ensuring proper proportions across the size range.
Construction Method
The sweater is constructed using a flat knitting method, with separate pieces for the back, front, and sleeves that are assembled after completion. The back piece is worked first, establishing the basic structure and armhole shaping. The front piece incorporates the intarsia chart detail while following similar shaping instructions. Ribbed sections are worked at the beginning of the pattern to create finished edges at the cuffs and hem, with the main body worked in stockinette stitch for a classic, smooth appearance.
