This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Erin Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern for a children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork design. The pattern is designed by an independent designer and offers multiple size options to accommodate different ages and measurements. The sweater is worked in stockinette stitch with ribbed edging, combining classic construction techniques with decorative intarsia charting for personalized monogram or design elements.
What Is Being Made
A fitted children's sweater with set-in armholes and a crew neckline. The garment features intarsia colorwork that allows for custom monogram or design incorporation. The sweater includes a ribbed waistband, cuffs, and neckline for a polished finish. Multiple size options are provided within a single pattern, making it suitable for children of varying ages.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia Colorwork: The primary decorative technique, allowing for detailed monogram or design charts to be incorporated into the sweater body using multiple yarn colors
- Set-in Armholes: Shaped armholes created through strategic decreases at the beginning of rows to achieve a fitted sleeve cap
- Ribbed Edging: Elastic ribbing used at the waist, cuffs, and neckline for structure and comfort
- Thumb Method Cast-On: Used for initial stitch setup, providing a secure foundation for the garment
- Stitch Holder Technique: Stitches are held for later finishing, particularly for neckline and sleeve cap construction
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the main body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic fabric
- 2x2 Ribbing: Alternating knit and purl stitches (k2, p2 repeat) used for waistband, cuffs, and neckline
- Purl Two Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping armholes and waist shaping
- Knit Stitches: Basic knit stitches form the foundation of stockinette stitch sections
Materials and Specifications
Yarn Weight: 4-ply yarn is specified for this pattern. Yarn amounts are based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn type are used, so matching these specifications is important for proper fit and finished dimensions.
Needles: The pattern uses two needle sizes. Smaller 2¾mm needles are used for the ribbed sections (waistband, cuffs, and neckline), while larger 3¼mm needles are used for the main stockinette stitch body. This needle size variation is a standard technique to create tighter, more elastic ribbing while maintaining a more open fabric in the body.
Difficulty Level: Rated as intermediate, this pattern requires foundational knitting knowledge including ability to work stockinette stitch, ribbing, basic shaping decreases, and most importantly, competency with intarsia colorwork techniques. The intarsia element elevates this beyond a beginner project.
Pattern Structure
The pattern provides multiple size options, indicated by bracketed measurements throughout (such as [25:29:29:33] sts). Instructions are given for back, front, and sleeve pieces with specific row counts and shaping instructions for each size. Armhole shaping is worked through decreases at row beginnings, and the pattern includes detailed stitch counts to ensure proper fit. The intarsia chart is referenced within the pattern to guide colorwork placement on the front piece.
