Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Devon Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater pattern designed using the intarsia knitting technique. The garment features a personalized moniker chart, allowing crafters to incorporate a child's name or initials into the sweater design. The pattern includes both back and front pieces with shaped armholes and a ribbed neckline, creating a classic fitted children's pullover sweater.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project classified as intermediate difficulty. The primary construction method is intarsia knitting, which is an advanced colorwork technique that allows for the creation of large, detailed motifs and personalized designs by knitting with multiple colors of yarn. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia uses separate lengths of yarn for each color section, creating a single-thickness fabric ideal for incorporating text, names, and complex patterns into sweater designs.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used
The sweater construction employs several fundamental knitting stitches:
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): Used throughout the main body of the sweater for a smooth, classic fabric appearance
- 2x2 Ribbing: A knit-2, purl-2 rib pattern worked at the cuffs and neckline to create elasticity and a fitted finish
- Decreases: Single decreases (dec 1 st) are worked at armhole edges to shape the garment, and purl-2-together (p2tog) decreases are incorporated into the ribbing pattern for shaping
- Intarsia Chart Stitches: The moniker chart is worked in stockinette stitch using the intarsia method, allowing the personalized name or initials to be knitted directly into the fabric
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is a lightweight yarn suitable for creating well-defined stitch definition and detailed colorwork. The pattern requires two needle sizes:
- 2¾mm needles: Used for the initial cast-on and ribbed sections (cuffs and neckline)
- 3¼mm needles: Used for the main body worked in stockinette stitch
The use of smaller needles for ribbing creates a tighter, more elastic fabric, while the slightly larger needles for the body produce the proper gauge and drape for the sweater. Yarn amounts are based on achieving the specified tension with the recommended yarn weight and needle sizes.
Pattern Structure and Sizing
The pattern provides multiple size options for children, with stitch counts and row counts varying by size. The garment includes detailed shaping instructions for armholes, with decreases worked at regular intervals to create a fitted sleeve cap. The front and back pieces are shaped identically through the armhole section, with the intarsia moniker chart incorporated into the front piece design.
