Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Dave Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork design. The pattern is designed by an independent designer and offers an intermediate level of difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience in garment construction and colorwork techniques.
What Is Being Made
A fitted children's sweater with a classic pullover construction. The garment is worked in pieces—back, front, and sleeves—which are then assembled. The sweater features intarsia colorwork, which allows for detailed pictorial or graphic designs to be incorporated into the knitted fabric using the Dave Moniker Chart provided with the pattern.
Knitting Techniques Used
Intarsia Colorwork: The primary technique featured in this pattern, intarsia involves knitting with multiple colors of yarn to create a detailed design. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia uses separate lengths of yarn for each color section, preventing bulk on the reverse side and allowing for larger color areas without carrying yarn across the back.
Ribbed Edging: The pattern incorporates 2x2 ribbing (knit 2, purl 2) at the cuffs and hem, which provides elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape during wear and washing.
Armhole Shaping: The pattern includes structured armhole shaping achieved through strategic decreases, creating a properly fitted sleeve cap that sits smoothly on a child's shoulders.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The main fabric stitch used throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, flat surface ideal for displaying intarsia colorwork
- 2x2 Ribbing (k2, p2): Used for cuffs and waistband ribbing to provide stretch and recovery
- Knit (k) and Purl (p): Fundamental stitches that form the basis of all pattern rows
- Purl 2 Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping armholes and other fitted areas
- Backstitch: The seaming technique used to join the finished pieces together
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern is designed for 4-ply weight yarn, which is a lightweight, versatile yarn weight suitable for children's garments. The specific yarn amounts vary based on the size being knitted, with the pattern accommodating multiple size options.
Needles: The pattern requires two needle sizes—2¾mm needles for the initial ribbed cuff and waistband, and 3¼mm needles for the main stockinette stitch body. Using smaller needles for the ribbing creates a tighter, more elastic fabric, while the larger needles allow the main fabric to drape appropriately.
Additional Notions: Stitch holders are needed to hold stitches temporarily during construction, particularly for the neckline and armhole shaping.
Pattern Construction Details
The sweater is worked with multiple size options built into the pattern, indicated by bracketed numbers representing different measurements. The back piece is cast on with 70 stitches and worked in ribbing before transitioning to stockinette stitch. After the main body length is achieved, armhole shaping is introduced through decreases worked at the beginning of rows.
The front piece follows a similar construction to the back but includes the intarsia colorwork chart integration, where the Dave Moniker Chart is worked into the stockinette stitch fabric. This requires careful attention to color changes and yarn management to maintain even tension and prevent holes or loose stitches at color transitions.
The pattern includes detailed row-by-row instructions with specific stitch counts for each size, ensuring proper fit across the range of children's measurements. Armhole depth and other key measurements are provided in both centimeters and inches for reference.
