This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Cat Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a children's sweater featuring an intarsia cat moniker chart design. The pattern is designed as an intermediate-level project suitable for knitters with some experience in colorwork and garment construction. The sweater is worked primarily in stockinette stitch with ribbed edgings, and includes detailed shaping for armholes and neckline.
What Is Being Made
A fitted children's pullover sweater with an intarsia cat motif worked into the front. The garment features a classic crew neckline, set-in armholes, and is constructed with separate front and back pieces that are seamed together. The design includes ribbed welts at the cuffs, hem, and neckline for a polished finish.
Techniques Used
- Intarsia colorwork: The cat moniker chart is worked using the intarsia technique, which involves using separate lengths of yarn for different colored sections to create a picture or motif without carrying yarn across the back of the work
- Stockinette stitch: The main body of the sweater is worked in stockinette stitch (knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows) for a smooth, classic fabric
- Ribbed edgings: 2x2 rib (alternating 2 knit stitches and 2 purl stitches) is used for the cuffs, hem, and neckline to provide elasticity and a neat finish
- Shaping: Armhole shaping is achieved through decreases worked at the beginning of rows, and the pattern includes multiple size options with graduated shaping instructions
- Seaming: The pattern involves back stitch seaming to join the front and back pieces together
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k): The fundamental stitch used throughout the stockinette stitch sections
- Purl stitch (p): Used in stockinette stitch rows and ribbed edgings
- Purl two together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping armholes and other decreases
- 2x2 rib: A combination of knit and purl stitches that creates an elastic, textured edging
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed to be worked with 4-ply yarn, which is a lightweight yarn weight suitable for children's garments and produces a refined fabric with good stitch definition for intarsia work. The pattern calls for 2¾mm needles for the main body and 3¼mm needles for ribbed sections, with the needle size change creating the proper tension for the ribbed edgings.
The pattern is provided in multiple sizes with varying stitch counts and row lengths to accommodate different children's measurements. Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension with the recommended yarn weight and needle size. The intarsia chart requires careful color selection to create a distinct cat design against the background color of the sweater.
Pattern Structure
The pattern is organized with separate instructions for the back and front pieces. The back is worked first, establishing the basic shaping and length. The front follows the same initial structure but includes the intarsia cat moniker chart integration within the stockinette stitch sections. Armhole shaping is worked on both pieces, and the pattern provides guidance for finishing the neckline and seaming the garment together.
