Intarsia - Bex Moniker Chart Children's Sweater

What is Being Made

This is a children's sweater pattern featuring intarsia colorwork design. The garment includes a shaped back and front with armhole shaping, ribbed cuffs and hem, and is designed to be worked in multiple sizes for growing children. The intarsia technique allows for detailed pictorial or moniker charts to be incorporated into the knitted fabric.

Craft and Technique Overview

Primary Craft: Knitting

This pattern uses the intarsia knitting technique, which involves knitting with multiple colors to create detailed designs or personalized monikers. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia uses separate lengths of yarn for each color block, preventing bulk on the reverse side and allowing for larger color areas without carrying yarn across the back of the work. This technique is ideal for children's garments where comfort and fit are important.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The main fabric throughout the sweater body, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance
  • 2x2 Ribbing: Used for the cuffs and hem to provide elasticity and a finished edge. The ribbing is worked over 7 rows following the initial cast-on
  • Knit (k) and Purl (p) stitches: Foundation stitches used to create the ribbing pattern and structure
  • Decrease stitches (p2tog): Used for armhole shaping to create fitted sleeve openings

Construction Details

The sweater is constructed with a back and front panel. The back begins with casting on 70 [78:86:94:102] stitches depending on size, worked in 2x2 ribbing before transitioning to stockinette stitch. The pattern includes multiple size options with staggered row counts: 40 [50:60:72:82] rows are worked before armhole shaping begins. Armholes are shaped by decreasing 1 stitch at each end of every row over 4 [4:5:5:6] rows, reducing the stitch count to 55 [63:67:75:79] stitches. The front is worked similarly with the intarsia chart incorporated into the stockinette stitch fabric. Armhole depth measures 10 [11:12:13:14]cm (4 [4¼:4¾:5¼:5½]inches).

Materials Required

  • Yarn Weight: 4-ply (fingering weight), which provides a lightweight, durable fabric suitable for children's wear
  • Needles: Two sizes are used—2¾mm needles for the ribbed sections and 3¼mm needles for the main stockinette stitch body. This needle size differential creates proper gauge and elasticity in the ribbing
  • Additional Supplies: Stitch holders for holding stitches during construction, and separate yarn lengths in multiple colors for the intarsia chart work

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. Knitters should be comfortable with basic stitches, shaping techniques, and gauge adjustment. The intarsia colorwork technique requires attention to color changes and managing multiple yarn lengths, making this pattern suitable for knitters with some experience beyond beginner level.

Design Features

The sweater incorporates a personalized intarsia chart—the "Bex Moniker"—allowing for customization with names or initials. The fitted armhole shaping and multiple size options make this a practical, wearable garment for children. The combination of ribbed edges and stockinette body creates a professional, finished appearance while maintaining the flexibility needed for active wear.
