Intarsia Aubrey Moniker Chart Children's Sweater

Project Overview

This is an intermediate-level knitted children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork design. The pattern uses the Aubrey Moniker Chart, allowing for personalization through intarsia technique. The sweater is constructed in pieces (back, front, and sleeves) using stockinette stitch as the primary fabric structure, with ribbed edging for a finished appearance.

What Is Being Made

A fitted children's pullover sweater with long sleeves and crew neckline. The garment is worked flat in separate pieces that are subsequently seamed together. The design incorporates intarsia colorwork, a technique that allows for detailed pictorial or monogram designs to be knitted directly into the fabric using the Aubrey Moniker Chart provided.

Techniques Used

  • Intarsia Colorwork: The primary decorative technique, allowing the Aubrey Moniker Chart to be worked into the front of the sweater using separate yarn colors for different sections of the design
  • Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The main fabric structure worked throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knit surface
  • Ribbing: 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2) used for cuffs, waistband, and neckline edges to provide elasticity and a neat finish
  • Armhole Shaping: Decreases worked at each end of rows to create fitted armholes and sleeve cap shaping
  • Seaming: Pieces are joined together using backstitch or mattress stitch construction methods

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k): Foundation stitch for stockinette fabric
  • Purl (p): Used in ribbing pattern and reverse stockinette sections
  • Purl 2 Together (p2tog): Decrease stitch used for shaping armholes and waist
  • 2x2 Rib Pattern: Alternating knit and purl stitches in a 2-stitch repeat, worked for 7 rows after initial ribbing setup

Materials and Specifications

This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides a lightweight, durable fabric suitable for children's wear. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the main body work in stockinette stitch and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed edging sections. Needle size adjustment is standard practice to achieve proper gauge and fabric density.

Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn weight. Multiple size options are provided within the pattern, indicated by bracketed measurements such as [25:29:29:33], allowing the sweater to be knitted in different children's sizes. Accurate gauge measurement before beginning is essential for proper fit.

Pattern Construction

The sweater begins with casting on 70 [78:86:94:102] stitches for the back piece. Initial rows establish a 2x2 rib pattern for approximately 7 rows, creating a neat, elastic edge. The pattern then transitions to stockinette stitch and continues for 40 to 82 rows depending on size, establishing the body length. Armhole shaping is introduced through decreases worked at each end of rows over 4 to 6 rows, reducing the stitch count to 55 [63:67:75:79] stitches. The front piece follows similar construction with integrated intarsia colorwork from the Aubrey Moniker Chart, allowing the personalized design element to be knitted into the fabric during the main body section.
