Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Alice Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater designed using the intarsia knitting technique. The pattern provides a chart-based design featuring the "Alice Moniker" motif, allowing knitters to incorporate personalized text or imagery into a classic pullover garment. The sweater is constructed with separate front and back pieces, with shaping at the armholes and a ribbed neckline finish.
Garment Construction and Sizing
The sweater is worked in multiple sizes to accommodate different children's measurements. The pattern includes detailed shaping instructions for armholes, with specific row counts and stitch decreases tailored to each size. The garment features a fitted silhouette achieved through strategic decreasing at the armhole edges, and the finished piece measures approximately 10 to 14 centimeters (4 to 5.5 inches) at the armhole depth, depending on the chosen size.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia Knitting: The primary technique for this project, allowing the knitter to work with multiple yarn colors to create the Alice Moniker chart design. This method involves carrying separate yarn lengths for different colored sections rather than stranding yarn across the back of the work.
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The main fabric throughout the sweater body, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance.
- Ribbing: Used for structure and elasticity, particularly in the neckline and cuff areas.
- Armhole Shaping: Achieved through decreasing one stitch at each end of multiple rows to create a fitted sleeve opening.
- Stitch Holders: Used to hold stitches temporarily during construction, particularly for neckline shaping.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
- 2x2 Ribbing: A fundamental stitch pattern used in this design, created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a two-by-two configuration. The pattern specifies working 2x2 rib for 7 rows after the initial ribbed setup, providing structure and recovery to the finished garment.
- Stockinette Stitch: Worked throughout the main body of both front and back pieces, creating the smooth canvas for the intarsia chart design.
- Purl Two Together (p2tog): A decrease technique used during armhole shaping and ribbing adjustments to reduce stitch count gradually.
Materials and Yarn Weight
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for displaying the intarsia chart details. The yarn amounts are calculated based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn weight are used, ensuring accurate yardage estimates for each size option.
Needles and Tools
- 2¾mm Needles: Used for the initial ribbed sections, providing a slightly tighter gauge for elastic cuffs and necklines.
- 3¼mm Needles: Used for the main body in stockinette stitch, creating the appropriate fabric density for the intarsia design.
- Stitch Holders: Required for holding stitches during neckline and armhole construction.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern requires knitters to have solid foundational skills including ability to read charts, manage multiple yarn colors in intarsia work, execute decreases for shaping, and understand garment construction principles. The intarsia technique and chart-reading component elevate this beyond beginner level, making it suitable for knitters with prior experience.
Pattern Format
This design is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing knitters to access the full pattern, charts, and sizing information digitally. The PDF format includes detailed row-by-row instructions, stitch counts for multiple sizes, and the intarsia chart for the Alice Moniker design.
