Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Albie Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater pattern designed using the intarsia technique, which allows for personalized moniker charts to be incorporated into the knit fabric. The garment features a classic pullover construction with shaped armholes and ribbed edging, making it suitable for everyday wear.
Techniques Used
Intarsia: This advanced colorwork technique involves knitting separate sections of different colored yarns into the fabric, creating a personalized moniker or name chart on the sweater. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia uses bobbins or separate yarn lengths for each color block, preventing long floats on the reverse side and creating a smoother, more professional finish.
Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch used throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns on the right side.
Ribbed Edging: The sweater incorporates 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2) at the cuffs and hem, providing elasticity and a finished appearance that helps the garment retain its shape.
Shaping: The pattern includes armhole shaping achieved through strategic decreases worked at the beginning of rows, creating a fitted silhouette appropriate for children's wear.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch creating the smooth stockinette fabric
- Purl (P): Used in ribbing and shaping decreases
- Purl 2 Together (p2tog): A left-leaning decrease used for armhole shaping
- 2x2 Rib: Alternating knit and purl stitches in a repeating pattern for elastic edging
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides a lightweight, durable fabric suitable for children's garments. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the main body worked in stockinette stitch and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed sections, with the smaller needle size creating tighter ribbing for better elasticity.
The sweater is available in multiple size options, with cast-on counts ranging from 70 to 102 stitches depending on the chosen size, and varying row counts to accommodate different lengths and proportions across the size range.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, reflecting the complexity of working intarsia colorwork while managing shaping and construction techniques. Knitters should be comfortable with basic stitch techniques, reading charts, and managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously before attempting this project.
