Infant Cocoon by Kristine Mullen

What is Being Made

The Infant Cocoon is a crocheted photo prop designed for newborn and infant photography sessions. With finished dimensions of 10 inches by 21½ inches when laid flat, this cocoon-shaped accessory creates a cozy, nest-like setting for posed baby photography. Important Safety Note: This design is intended exclusively as a photography prop and should not be used as an actual wrap or swaddle for babies, as the dense construction can cause overheating.

Craft and Technique

This project is created using crochet, making it an ideal choice for beginners seeking to develop fundamental skills. The pattern employs a circular construction method, beginning with a foundation chain that is joined into a ring. The design then builds outward through successive rounds of increases, creating the characteristic cocoon shape.

A distinctive feature of this pattern is its use of spaces between stitches as the primary working area. Rather than crocheting into individual stitches themselves, the pattern directs you to work into the spaces between stitches, creating an open, textured fabric that contributes to the cocoon's visual appeal and drape.

Stitches Used

  • Chain stitch (ch): Used to create the foundation ring and turning chains throughout the pattern
  • Double crochet (dc): The primary stitch used to build the body of the cocoon across all rounds
  • Slip stitch: Used to join rounds and create a seamless circular construction

Materials Required

This beginner-friendly project requires minimal materials. You will need 2 skeins of Lion Brand Thick & Quick yarn in Fisherman (a neutral, natural tone), paired with a Size N crochet hook. The super chunky yarn weight ensures quick project completion and creates the dense, cozy texture appropriate for a photo prop. A yarn needle is also needed for weaving in any loose ends upon completion.
