Product Description
One Christmas, for my older daughter’s teacher, I knitted Myrrhia Resneck’s lovely Ilaisa’s Wristies, a fingerless glove pattern that works with many different yarn weights. I had three balls of a nice variegated worsted weight which I wanted to use, and after the wristwarmers were finished, there were almost two full balls left over. So I whipped up a hat pattern to match: mostly stocking stitch, with the brim done in bell ribbing identical to that on the wristwarmers. This hat was intended to be a beret, but it doesn’t slouch enough for that, so it’s really more of a loose sort of toque. For more information on the inspiration for this pattern, Myrrhia Resneck’s knitting website is called Myrrhialand, where you can find the pattern for Ilaisa’s Wristies.
Ilaisa's Loose Toque by Kathleen Sperling
What Is Being Made
Ilaisa's Loose Toque is a women's knitted hat designed by Kathleen Sperling. Originally conceived as a beret, this pattern creates a relaxed, loose-fitting toque with a finished brim measurement of 19.5 inches. The hat is an ideal stash-busting project, developed to use leftover yarn from coordinating fingerless wristwarmers, making it perfect for knitters looking to maximize their yarn resources while creating a matching accessory set.
Techniques and Construction
This beginner-friendly knitting pattern employs straightforward construction methods suitable for newer knitters. The hat features two distinct sections: the brim is worked in bell ribbing, which matches the ribbing found on Ilaisa's Wristies fingerless gloves for a coordinated look. The main body of the hat is predominantly worked in stocking stitch, the fundamental knit fabric that creates a smooth, classic appearance. The combination of ribbed edging and stocking stitch body provides both structure at the brim and comfortable stretch throughout the hat.
Stitches Used
- Bell Ribbing – Used for the brim to create elasticity and a finished edge that matches the coordinating Ilaisa's Wristies pattern
- Stocking Stitch – The primary stitch used for the main body of the toque, creating a smooth, even fabric
Materials
Ilaisa's Loose Toque is designed to work with worsted weight yarn, making it an accessible project for most knitters. The pattern was originally developed using variegated worsted weight yarn, which adds visual interest to the finished hat. Knitters will need standard knitting needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn, though specific needle sizes are detailed within the pattern itself. This yarn weight choice makes the hat quick to knit while maintaining excellent durability and warmth.
