Hymenoptera Socks by Carlie Perrins
What Is Being Made
Hymenoptera Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Carlie Perrins for creating a pair of socks featuring stranded colorwork. The pattern is suitable for knitters of all skill levels, classified as a beginner-friendly project that introduces colorwork techniques in a wearable format.
Knitting Techniques
This sock pattern incorporates several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. Knitters will use Judy's Magic Cast-on to begin the project, a method that creates a seamless foundation ideal for sock construction. The pattern requires working in the round, typically using circular needles or double-pointed needles to create seamless cylindrical fabric. Stranded colorwork knitting is the primary decorative technique, allowing two colors to be worked simultaneously to create the Hymenoptera-inspired design. The pattern also includes techniques for shaping the sock, such as increasing and decreasing stitches to achieve proper fit through the leg and foot.
Stitches Used
The Hymenoptera Socks pattern employs essential knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches as the foundation of the fabric. Slipping stitches are incorporated, likely for edge definition or pattern transitions. The pattern concludes with a stretchy bind-off method, which ensures the sock cuff remains elastic and comfortable against the leg.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The pattern is designed to work with 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, which are standard sock yarn thicknesses. The sample shown uses superwash merino and nylon blend sock yarn for durability and easy care. The primary color is worked from a full 100g skein (approximately 423–463 meters), while the contrasting colorwork color requires only a mini skein of approximately 20g (84 meters), making this an excellent pattern for using up yarn stash or trying colorwork with minimal yardage commitment. Circular needles or double-pointed needles in an appropriate size for the chosen yarn are required to work this project in the round.
