Product Description

The Hutt Valley Hat uses a combination of stripes and a simple cabled stitch which makes it look far more complicated than it is. Each row uses just one single colour to knit. The pattern includes 2 crown options to choose from.

The pattern includes a chart, as well as written instructions. Instructions are also included for working the cable both with, and without a cable needle.

Extremely economical on yarn, this is a great project to use up remnant or leftover yarn. 2 skeins of Cascade 220 were enough to complete a woman's hat, a woman's pair of mitts and a child's pair of mitts, with yarn leftover!

Sized from Toddler to Man, this is a great pattern for all the family, and can be made in any combination of colours to suit.

The Hutt Valley hat is named for the area in which I live in, the Vs on the hat remind me of the Valleys I overlook from my house.

Hutt Valley Hat by Sarah Ronchetti

What Is Being Made

The Hutt Valley Hat is a knitted hat designed by Sarah Ronchetti, available in four fitted sizes: Toddler, Child, Woman, and Man. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished hat with head circumferences ranging from 17 inches (43 cm) for toddlers to 23 inches (58 cm) for men, with corresponding finished lengths from 6.5 inches to 9.25 inches. The hat features a two-color colorwork design that adds visual interest and dimension to the finished garment.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs several intermediate techniques to create its finished structure. The hat is worked in the round using circular needles, which allows for seamless construction and continuous knitting without requiring seaming. The pattern incorporates colorwork techniques using two contrasting yarn colors, with the main color (MC) and contrast color (CC) creating a patterned design. Cable work is included as an optional element, with a cable needle listed among the required tools, allowing knitters to add decorative cable stitches if desired. The pattern also uses standard techniques such as casting on, stocking stitch (stockinette stitch), and finishing with a darning needle.

Stitches Used

The Hutt Valley Hat utilizes fundamental knitting stitches worked across two different stitch gauges. The primary stitches include:

  • Knit stitch (k) – the basic foundation stitch
  • Purl stitch (p) – used to create texture and pattern variation
  • Slip stitch (sl) – worked purlwise to manage stitches and create clean edges
  • Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) – the main fabric structure, worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 cm)
  • Pattern stitch – the colorwork design section, worked at a gauge of 22 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm)
  • Cable stitches – optional decorative elements created using a cable needle (cn)

Materials and Tools

The Hutt Valley Hat is knitted using light worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors. Yardage requirements vary by size: toddler sizes require 50 meters (55 yards) of main color and 45 meters (50 yards) of contrast color, while adult men's sizes need 75 meters (80 yards) of main color and 65 meters (70 yards) of contrast color. Sarah Ronchetti suggests specific yarn options including Skeinz Urban, which yields 109 yards per 50-gram skein, and Cascade 220, which provides 220 yards per 100-gram skein.

The required tools include two 16-inch circular needles in US sizes #6 (4mm) and #7 (4.5mm), allowing the knitter to work with appropriately sized needles for the stocking stitch and pattern stitch gauges respectively. Additional tools include one stitch marker for tracking rounds, a darning needle for weaving in ends and finishing, and an optional cable needle for creating cable stitch details. This downloadable PDF pattern is an independent designer creation by Sarah Ronchetti, suitable for intermediate-level knitters seeking a colorwork hat project in multiple sizes.
