Product Description
Hugh is a sweet and squishy monster, who loves hugs. As Winnie the Pooh once said "a day without a friend is like a pot without a single drop of honey left inside" and Hugh hopes he can be your friend. As a little worry monster, he loves to listen and one hug can help all your worries melt away.
Please note: For this patterns there are two options, one to create a felted face and one for a crocheted face. Either will work out to create a sweet looking Worry Monster.
If you have chosen to make a felt face, you will not need the 4 ply yarn/ 2.25mm hook and visa versa.
I cannot wait to see all of your lovely makes. When sharing on Instagram, it would be wonderful if you could tag me as the designer @riapetals.
Hugh the Worry Monster Crochet Amigurumi Pattern
What is Being Made
Hugh the Worry Monster is a soft, huggable amigurumi toy designed by Ria Petals. This sweet crocheted monster stands approximately 20cm (8 inches) in height and is intended as a comfort companion. The finished piece is a three-dimensional stuffed toy perfect for children or anyone seeking a cuddly friend to help ease worries and anxieties.
Craft and Technique Overview
This is a crochet amigurumi pattern, which is the Japanese art of crocheting small, stuffed toys and creatures. Amigurumi projects are worked in the round to create seamless, dimensional shapes. Hugh the Worry Monster uses the continuous round method for most pieces, a technique that eliminates the need to join rounds with slip stitches, creating a smoother, more polished finish on the finished toy.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches suitable for amigurumi construction:
- Single crochet – the primary stitch used throughout the pattern, creating a tight, dense fabric ideal for stuffed toys that hold their shape well
Yarn and Materials
Hugh the Worry Monster is designed to be worked with 4-ply and sport weight yarn. These lighter yarn weights create a finely detailed finished toy with good stitch definition. The gauge for achieving the correct 20cm height is 12 stitches (width) by 13 stitches (height) in a 5cm x 5cm square using single crochets. The pattern notes that gauge is not overly critical as long as the resulting fabric has appropriate density and structure.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty and is suitable for confident beginners. While the continuous round method and basic single crochet stitches are foundational techniques, the overall construction of a multi-piece amigurumi toy requires comfort with shaping, increasing, decreasing, and assembly skills. Crocheters should have experience completing basic projects before attempting Hugh.
Pattern Format and Instructions
The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF written using American crochet terminology. This ensures clarity for crocheters familiar with standard American abbreviations and stitch definitions.
