Product Description

The finished toy size is anywhere between 15" - 26" (38 - 66cm) tall, depending on the yarn used. The Huggaluf pattern is fairly simple. The toy is knitted in the round, from bottom up. The written pattern provides detailed information row after row if needed. The photographs provide visual help while knitting the toy. This pattern requires very little sewing. I have used various soft and cuddly yarns in medium weight for my Huggalufs. For the body I used one ball of yarn or less than a ball in two colors for the striped Huggaluf. For the hat I used less than a ball of fluffy or furry yarn. You will need a small amount of red yarn for the lips, small amount of white yarn for the eye patch and black embroidery yarn for the eyes, or two funky looking buttons for the eyes.

Huggaluf Knitted Toy by Stana D. Sortor

What is Being Made

Huggaluf is a downloadable knitting pattern for a soft, cuddly stuffed toy designed by independent designer Stana D. Sortor. The finished toy measures between 15 to 26 inches tall depending on the yarn weight and hat style chosen. This handmade companion piece combines a knitted body with a decorative hat, making it an ideal project for creating personalized gifts or keepsakes.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for very soft and cuddly yarn to ensure the toy has a huggable texture. Crafters should select their favorite color for the main body, requiring one to two balls of yarn. An additional one to two balls of soft, fluffy, or furry yarn is needed for the hat component. Small amounts of red yarn are used for the lips, white yarn for the eye patch, or alternatively, two funky-looking buttons can substitute for eyes. Black embroidery yarn is required for additional details. The toy is stuffed with polyester fiberfill, with one small bag providing sufficient filling.

Needles and Tools

This knitting project uses double-pointed needles in US size #3 (3.25mm) in a set of five. Essential notions include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming, a crochet hook for finishing details, scissors, a stitch marker for tracking rounds, and the polyester fiberfill mentioned above.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Huggaluf pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. Key stitches and techniques include:

  • KFB (Knit in Front and Back) — An increase stitch that creates two stitches from one stitch, used for shaping the toy's body and expanding sections as needed
  • SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit) — A left-leaning decrease stitch that reduces two stitches to one, used for shaping and tapering sections of the toy
  • I-cord — A tubular knitting technique created by knitting stitches from one double-pointed needle to another without turning the work, commonly used for decorative elements, cords, or limbs

The pattern is worked in the round using double-pointed needles, a standard method for creating seamless cylindrical forms ideal for stuffed toys. Gauge will vary depending on the yarn weight selected, making this pattern adaptable to different yarn choices while maintaining the overall proportions of the finished toy.

Pattern Overview

Crafters will use a combination of increases, decreases, and I-cord techniques to construct the body, limbs, and hat of Huggaluf. The modular construction approach allows for customization in size and appearance based on yarn selection and embellishment choices, whether using embroidered details or button eyes.
