Product Description
No-sew double-layered potholders! And beautiful too.
The leafy potholders are made in the round from one end of the leaf to the other. The double layer makes them very safe to use and lovely to crochet. And we all love not having to do any sewing! The stitch pattern is using front and back post double crochet.
The pattern contains thorough written instructions, a full chart, and a photo tutorial for post stitches.
The finished potholders measure 14 cm (5.5 in) at the widest point and are 22 cm (8.5 in) long.
I used Krea de luxe organic cotton which is a really lovely yarn to work with, but you can use any 8/4 cotton. 3 skeins for a pair.
Hosta Potholders by Sidsel Sangild
What is Being Made
The Hosta Potholders are a set of no-sew, double-layered crocheted potholders designed by Sidsel Sangild. These functional kitchen accessories feature a finished measurement of 14 cm (5.5 inches) at their widest point and 22 cm (8.5 inches) in height. The double-layered construction provides insulation and heat protection for handling hot cookware, while the decorative stitch pattern creates a textured, leaf-like appearance inspired by hosta plants. A complete set requires three skeins of yarn.
Techniques Used
This crochet project employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques. The pattern begins with a magic ring, a popular method for starting projects in the round without a visible center hole. The potholders are constructed using the in-the-round technique, with each round joined using slip stitches. The pattern utilizes post stitches—specifically front post double crochet and back post double crochet—which create dimensional texture by working around the post of stitches from previous rounds rather than into the top loops. The no-sew construction means the layers are crocheted together as one piece, eliminating the need for seaming or additional finishing techniques.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch): Used for foundation and spacing throughout the pattern
- Double crochet (dc): The primary stitch used in the base round and throughout the pattern
- Front post double crochet (FPdc, abbreviated as F): A textured stitch that creates dimension by working around the front of the post
- Back post double crochet (BPdc, abbreviated as B): Works around the back of the post to create alternating texture
- Slip stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and create a seamless circular construction
Materials
The Hosta Potholders are crafted using Krea de luxe organic cotton yarn in color 41, a sport weight yarn with a yardage of 165 meters per 50-gram skein. Three skeins are required to complete a full set of potholders. A 3 mm crochet hook is recommended for this project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 27 stitches measured over 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked in the stitch pattern, ensuring consistent sizing and proper drape of the finished potholders. The organic cotton fiber is ideal for kitchen textiles, offering breathability, durability, and heat-resistant properties suitable for handling hot cookware.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it uses fundamental crochet stitches such as chain and double crochet, the incorporation of post stitches and the in-the-round construction require familiarity with more advanced techniques. Crocheters with experience in working with post stitches and maintaining consistent tension in circular projects will find this pattern accessible, though beginners may benefit from practicing post stitches separately before beginning.
