HORISONT Pullover by Veta Romanenkova
What is Being Made
The HORISONT Pullover is a contemporary knitted sweater designed by Veta Romanenkova from the Fall Winter 19 Collection. This design offers both women's and men's sizing options, with women's sizes ranging from 38" to 51" bust circumference and men's sizes from 42" to 56.5" chest circumference. The pullover features a modern construction with color work elements, combining a main color yarn with two contrasting color yarns to create visual interest and depth in the finished garment.
Techniques Used
The HORISONT Pullover employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques. The construction utilizes circular knitting worked from the bottom up, using circular needles in multiple sizes to accommodate different stitch counts and garment sections. Stranded colorwork is incorporated throughout the design, requiring the knitter to work with multiple yarn colors simultaneously to create the pattern. The pattern includes ribbed edging for structure and elasticity at the cuffs, waistband, and neckline. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases to create the garment's silhouette and proper fit across multiple sizes.
Stitches Used
The HORISONT Pullover is constructed primarily using stockinette stitch, the foundational stitch for most of the body and sleeves. Ribbed knit (typically knit and purl combinations) forms the structural edgings throughout the garment. The colorwork pattern is achieved through stranded knitting, where two colors are carried across rows to create the design motifs. The combination of these stitches creates a fabric with good drape and elasticity while showcasing the color pattern effectively.
Materials
The HORISONT Pullover is designed to be knitted with premium merino wool yarns from Woolfolk. The main color is worked in Woolfolk Flette, a DK-weight yarn composed of 100% Ovis 21 Ultimate Merino® fiber, offering 131 yards per 50-gram skein. Contrast colors are worked in Woolfolk Tov DK, also 100% Ovis 21 Ultimate Merino®, providing 160 yards per 50-gram skein. Women's versions require 4 to 6 skeins of main color Flette yarn depending on size, 1 skein of contrast color Tov DK, and 3 to 4 skeins of a second contrast color Tov DK. Men's versions require 7 to 9 skeins of main color Flette, 1 skein of contrast Tov DK, and 4 to 5 skeins of contrast Flette.
Needles required include US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needles in 24" length and either 16" circular needles or double-pointed needles for smaller circumferences, US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles in 24" length, and US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in 24" length. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and removable markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with experience in basic techniques who are ready to tackle stranded colorwork and garment construction with multiple sizing options. The combination of circular knitting, color work, and fitted shaping requires attention to detail and familiarity with reading charts and managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously.
