Product Description
Blanket using filet crochet technique with a puff stitch border. The idea for this design started off when I was making cushion covers and working out how to join hexagons together to make a square shaped panel. When I played around with the templates it dawned on me that by spacing the hexagons apart it would create a diamond pattern in between the hexies. Use as many or as few colours as you like. I went for a solid mustard colour with cream for the border. My wonderful pattern testers used a variety colours to create a pretty striped effect. The pattern is written to make a blanket measuring 34x40 inches using aran/worsted weight yarn with a 6mm hook. You could use any yarn and hook size you like. I've included simple instructions on how to adapt the sizing. Have fun and get creative with it, the pattern would also make a lovely cushion cover by making 2 small panels and join using the same border. Honeycomb Diamonds Blanket Pattern Overview
Project Description
The Honeycomb Diamonds Blanket is an intermediate-level crochet project designed by Hayley Hall of Hello Moon Crochet. This finished blanket measures 34 by 40 inches and features a distinctive honeycomb diamond stitch pattern with a decorative puff stitch border. The pattern is written in US crochet terms, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with American terminology and abbreviations.
What You Will Create
This project results in a substantial throw blanket suitable for layering on furniture or providing warmth. The honeycomb diamond motif creates visual texture and interest across the blanket surface, while the puff stitch border adds a finished, dimensional edge. The designer's version uses a two-color colorway with mustard as the primary color and cream accents, though the pattern is flexible enough to accommodate multiple color variations.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Honeycomb Diamonds Blanket employs several key crochet techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters:
- Honeycomb Diamond Stitch: The primary stitch pattern that creates the blanket's signature textured appearance. This stitch is worked in repeating blocks that form diamond shapes with a honeycomb-like quality.
- Puff Stitches: Used exclusively in the final row of the border to create dimensional, textured edging that stands out visually against the main blanket body.
- Pattern Repeats: The design uses a charted pattern repeat system, allowing crocheters to follow a visual guide in addition to written instructions. The pattern repeat can be adjusted by modifying the starting chain.
- Color Changes: The pattern accommodates color work, whether for a two-tone design or striped effects. The designer recommends changing colors after completing a block of 7 rows for a striped appearance.
- Turning Chains: Standard turning chain techniques are used at the beginning of rows to maintain proper stitch height and structure.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This blanket requires approximately 525 grams of worsted weight yarn in total. The designer used WI soft and smooth aran yarn, consisting of 450 grams in mustard and 75 grams in cream for the border puff stitches. A 6mm crochet hook is recommended for this yarn weight and pattern.
The pattern is flexible regarding yarn selection. Crocheters can substitute any yarn type, provided they adjust the hook size accordingly to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape. This adaptability allows for personalization based on fiber preference, whether using acrylic, wool, cotton blends, or other yarn varieties.
Customization and Sizing Options
The Honeycomb Diamonds Blanket pattern is easily customizable for different finished dimensions. To adjust the blanket size, crocheters simply modify the starting chain length using any multiple of 12 plus 1 additional chain stitch. This mathematical flexibility enables makers to create smaller lap blankets, larger bed throws, or any size in between while maintaining the honeycomb diamond pattern integrity.
Color customization is encouraged by the designer. While the original features a solid mustard body with cream accents, pattern testers created blankets using a beautiful variety of color combinations. For striped effects, changing yarn color after each 7-row block creates organized, visually distinct horizontal stripes throughout the blanket.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with pattern charts, manage color changes, and execute specialty stitches like puff stitches. The combination of the honeycomb diamond stitch pattern and the dimensional border work provides an engaging challenge without requiring advanced techniques.
