Product Description

Skill Level: Intermediate

This delicate looking scarf is a beautiful combination of the honeycomb stitch framed on either side by cables...giving it that all time classic look. Althouth, the cables only show on the front side of the scarf the honeycomb is reversible so it looks great on both sides.

This well written crochet pattern calls for 1 ½ balls of Patons® Lace and the finished scarf measures approximately 6.5” (16.5 cm) wide and 57” (145 cm) long excluding the tassels. The pattern uses the following stitches: hdc, dc, fpdc, bpdc, and fptr.

Honey Bee Scarf by knot•sew•cute

Project Overview

The Honey Bee Scarf is an intermediate-level crochet design that creates a lightweight, textured accessory perfect for layering or casual wear. This downloadable crochet pattern uses lace and sport weight yarns to produce an airy, delicate finished piece with visual interest through post stitch techniques.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a crocheted scarf designed with dimensional texture and an elegant drape. The finished scarf combines openwork sections with structured post stitches to create a design that balances airiness with definition, suitable for a variety of seasons and styling options.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: 1½ balls of Patons® Lace (or comparable lace weight yarn), approximately 3 ounces (85 g) and 498 yards (455 meters) per ball. The pattern sample is shown in Vintage (colorway 33008)
  • Crochet Hooks: 3.50 mm hook (primary working hook) and 6.00 mm hook
  • Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 19 half double crochet stitches and 15 rows equaling 4 inches (10 cm) when worked with the 3.50 mm crochet hook. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions and drape of the scarf.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used

This intermediate scarf incorporates several crochet techniques to build texture and visual appeal:

  • Foundation Stitches: Chain (ch) and slip stitch (sl st) for starting and joining
  • Basic Stitches: Single crochet (sc) and half double crochet (hdc) for fabric structure
  • Tall Stitches: Double crochet (dc) for height and drape
  • Post Stitches: Front post double crochet (FPdc) and back post double crochet (BPdc), which are worked around the post of previous stitches rather than into the top loops. These techniques create raised, dimensional textures and are fundamental to the scarf's visual interest
  • Advanced Post Stitch: Front post treble crochet (FPtr), a tall post stitch variation that adds additional height and definition to textured sections

Stitch Technique Details

Post stitches are a key feature of this pattern. Front post double crochet (FPdc) is executed by yarning over, inserting the hook from front to back around the designated stitch post, yarning over and pulling up a loop to create three loops on the hook, then completing the stitch by yarning over and drawing through two loops twice. Back post double crochet (BPdc) follows the same process but with the hook inserted from back to front, creating a complementary textured effect on the reverse side. Front post treble crochet (FPtr) extends this technique using a taller stitch foundation (two initial yarn overs instead of one), resulting in even more pronounced dimensional texture.

Yarn Weight Considerations

The pattern calls for lace and sport weight yarns, which are lightweight options that create an open, breathable fabric ideal for scarves. Lace weight yarn produces particularly delicate, lacy sections, while sport weight provides slightly more structure. The combination of these weights with post stitch techniques results in a scarf with excellent drape and visual complexity despite the lightweight materials.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic crochet stitches and introduces post stitch variations that require understanding how to work around stitch posts rather than into traditional stitch tops. Crocheters new to post stitches will develop valuable texture-building skills through this project.
