Product Description
I used homespun, but you could use a super bulky yarn
Wear the cowl in what would appear to be "inside out" so that the leaf tips show. You can see from the close up that the lower edge is actually the leaves inside out
Something I would consider if I repeated this pattern. It is a fairly loose. You could probably only double the stitches instead of tripling them. You could make the leaves longer then, and it would come up higher on your neck. Just a suggestion.
Homespun Leaf Cowl by Vickie Hartog
What is Being Made
The Homespun Leaf Cowl is a circular knitted cowl featuring a decorative leaf-edge design. This intermediate-level project combines a chunky main body with a delicate sockweight leaf border, creating visual interest through contrasting textures and techniques. The cowl is worked in the round from the cast-on through completion, making it a seamless accessory piece.
Construction Technique
The cowl is constructed using a two-stage knitting method that combines different yarn weights and needle sizes to achieve distinct sections. The project begins with a stockinette stitch main body worked in the round, followed by a dramatic increase that transitions into a leaf-patterned edging. The construction method allows for flexibility in the main body length, with the pattern noting that crafters can simply stop and transition to the next section without concern for round alignment.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch: Forms the foundation of the main body worked in continuous rounds
- Purl stitch: Creates alternating texture in the main body section
- Yarn over (YO): Used in the transition row to triple the stitch count from 80 to 240 stitches, creating the base for the leaf edging
- Leaf pattern graph: A charted stitch pattern worked over multiple rows (rows 4-67) that creates the decorative leaf-edge detail, repeated and worked as established from the provided graph
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern uses two distinct yarn weights to create its layered design effect. The main body is worked with 118 grams of homespun yarn, a super chunky weight yarn that provides structure and bulk. The homespun is worked on 12mm needles for the initial 80-stitch cast-on and stockinette sections. The leaf edging transitions to 100 grams of sockweight yarn in a colorway shown as Cadenza R, worked on 4.5mm needles. This dramatic needle and yarn weight change creates the delicate contrast between the chunky body and the intricate leaf border.
Skill Level and Pattern Details
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern requires comfort with circular knitting, reading stitch charts, and managing multiple yarn weights within a single project. The pattern provides a graph-based leaf design that is repeated multiple times throughout the edging section, with specific instructions for working rows 51-66 twice to complete the pattern repeat. The finished measurements section is noted in the original pattern, though specific dimensions are not provided in the available documentation.
